Oral Histories Workshop

On Fri., Nov. 12 (4-8pm) and Sat., Nov. 13 (9am-3pm), CLAS and its co-sponsors will host a free two-day workshop entitled "Historias: Conducting Oral Histories with Latina/o/x Communities" at the Martin de Porres Center. Drs. Elena Foulis and Juan Coronado will train participants in planning and conducting oral history projects.

Workshop participants will gain hands-on experience and will learn about topics such as ethics, understanding the complexity of Latina/o/x communities, interviewing techniques in English and Spanish, transcribing, and archiving.

CIENCIAS 2021 Networking Event

Join the Ohio State chapter of Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, (4-6pm, MLK Lounge, Hale Hall) as they host CIENCIAS 2021, their Annual Diversity STEM Networking Event.

Come connect with URM STEM students and professionals at Ohio State. All are welcome: undergraduate, graduate, postdoc, faculty, and staff. Meet fellow STEM buckeyes and possibly your future mentor or mentee.

Felipe Hinojosa: "Apostles of Change"

On Wed., November 3rd (3:30pm), Dr. Felipe Hinojosa will give a book talk entitled "Apostles of Change: Religion, Radical Politics, and the Latino Freedom Movement." This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Thompson Library, Room 165.

In this talk, Dr. Hinojosa will discuss the intertwined histories of Latino radicalism and religion in urban America and will highlight how religion and radical politics fueled the Latino freedom movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

"Racialized identities in language teaching, learning, and research"

On Tues., November 9th (4:30-5:30pm), the College of Education & Human Ecology and its co-sponsors will welcome Dr. Uju Anya of Carnegie Mellon University for a talk entitled "Racialized identities in language teaching, learning, and research: Lessons from Black students' experiences abroad."

The event will take place in-person in the Ohio Union, 3020-C. Per university mandate, masks are required.

Dissertation research funding available
via Fulbright-Hays

The Office of International Affairs is soliciting applicants for the FY2022 U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship competition. This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6 to 12 months.

Interested students must contact Joanna Kukielka-Blaser (kukielka-blaser.1@osu.edu) before October 31 to discuss the application process.

Save the Date: CAPES Print Workshop with Brazilian Universities

On November 17-18 (11am-1pm), the Brazil Gateway and CLAS will host two virtual workshops for graduate students and faculty interested in pursuing research projects with Brazilian universities.

The workshops will showcase the CAPES PrInt program, which supports graduate student and faculty exchanges financed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. CAPES-PrInt offers funding for graduate students, faculty mobility opportunities and serves as a network to establish research connections.

International Alumni Conversation with
Gil Latz

Join Gil Latz, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, and Alice Mong, ’86, executive director of the Asia Society, Hong Kong Center, and member of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, for an hour-long conversation on Tues., October 26, 9-10am. Latz will share updates on initiatives and programs as well as discuss priorities identified in Ohio State’s international strategic plan.
