The future of humanity is not dark – I have this faith. Human beings will seek and one day realize that inextinguishable flame that remains ever-burning behind the veil of darkness.

Ayurvedic Winter Tips

from Ac. Kaverii

Ayurveda teaches us that health is about creating balance; balance within our body and mind and with the outer environment. There are subtle and not so subtle shifts throughout the day and seasons. The ancient sciences of Ayurveda and Yoga provide tools to access a deeper level of awareness and well being.

Winter is a wonderful time to slow down and focus on self care. Here are a few Ayurvedic practices that will bring forth a sense of calm and centeredness. .

  1. Create a routine and try to stick with it. Regularity in routine brings about a groundedness and balance in all parts of your life.
  2. Rest Up. The dark season is the perfect time to focus on getting more sleep. The ideal sleep cycle in winter is to bed by 10 and up by dawn.
  3. Warm up with winter soups and warming spices in your meals. Here is a wonderful, easy to digest. https://urbanfarmie.com/kitchari/
  4. Get some exercise and fresh air. Why not combine them and go for a brisk walk!
  5. Warm up with abhyanga, massage with sesame oil. Sesame oil is known to warm the body and help bring a sense of calm and grounding. There are so many benefits to this practice.

SEVA (SERVICE)

Holiday Benefit

In December Dharmalaya hosted its first Holiday Party Benefit since the pandemic began. The event, created by the Ananda Seva Eugene community, was able to raise $1,000 for ArtCity a local nonprofit dedicated to creating quantum change through art.

Pictured above is a impromptu collective singing of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that broke out in the middle of the raffle prizes being handed out.

Many people volunteered their time and effort and resources to make the event a success. Special recognition goes to Sharanya for organizing all the food and to Shanti who worked with her all evening in the kitchen! The musicians all created a very special atmosphere as well! Gratitude to Gayatri, Rob, Anandam, Jayanti, Dacé and Etienne (our youngest musician). Much appreciation to Melissa, who was responsible for the children's crafts and Kaverii, Samudra, Vasumati, Charly, Ammadevi, Clare, Ravi and Madhuliika all helped to prepare the site. It was a real team effort and a good time was had by all!

Seva in Maharliika

Ongoing Service projects in Maharliika (Philippines)

Ac. Atma Jyoti works tirelessly in Maharliika with the tribal populations that are by and large forgotten by the government. In December, Ananda Seva Maharliika lanuched a gift giving campaign that reached one of the most remote schools in Paquibato District. Their "Santa" volunteer was a newly assigned Indigenous teacher named Susan Batawan. She has to walk three hours to reach the school, such is her dedication and service. Ac. Atma Joyti led the efforts to carry out this successful mission. If you would like to support these ongoing efforts in Maharliika, please make a donation via our website and choose the "support for Maharliika service projects" option in the drop down menu.

NEW ON TEACHABLE:

Our Transformation Education Teachable site gives participants the option to take on-demand courses at their own pace. We now have 16 classes up on the platform covering a variety of topics.

This course is for people interested in what neohumanism contributes to our understanding of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. Our contemporary world is riven with social antagonisms and political vitriol that many blame on “identity politics,” a term that gets tossed around often but without clear understanding of what it means or entails. So, what is “identity politics,” and why is it so charged? Where did it come from, how did it develop, and what are its implications? Are there are other forms of political engagement and social movement more suitable to the challenges we currently face? In this two-part course we’ll explore these questions and examine the possibility that identity politics does more to reinforce the status quo than to challenge it. As an alternative, we’ll consider how neohumanism engages issues of identity and advances universal social equality as the basis of human freedom and liberation.

This course is taught by Jason Schreiner.
