Speaker Series
Forgiveness is a major theme in Scripture. Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, God continually forgives the people of Israel for their transgressions. In the New Testament, Jesus gives us two very good reasons for forgiving others. First, that your own sins might be forgiven: “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-16). Second, we forgive so that our prayers will be heard: “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mark 11:25). But Jesus takes the idea of forgiveness much further than even his disciples could have imagined. He tells us that we should forgive those who harm us not just once or twice but over and over, as many times as necessary: Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18:22).
Please join us on Thursday, May 12 from 4pm to 5:15 pm inside the church as we listen to Father James Okafor reflect on the topic of Forgiveness. Father James received his BA in both Philosophy and Theology from Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, Nigeria, his M.A. in Catechetics from Santa Clara University, and his Doctorate in Catholic Educational Leadership from University of San Francisco. His research interests are parish and high school catechesis, formation of catechists, and the theological formation and spirituality of Catholic school educators. Father James is the author of two publications, You Too Can Forgive (Nimo, Anambra State, Nigeria: Rex Charles & Patrick Ltd., 2004) and Lay Educators of Catholic Schools. Leading and Teaching through Wisdom and Witness: A Case of Catholic Secondary Schools in Awka Diocese, Nigeria (Saarbrücken, Germany: Lambert Academic Publishing, 2014). Father James is currently a lecturer at Santa Clara University’s Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries and is parochial vicar at St. Frances Cabrini parish.

Storytime Books is holding a book donation drive at the Masses on April 30 and May 1. Please bring your gently used children's books—preferably for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, but we'll take books for all young readers—in any language. The Risen Christ
Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene walked to Jesus’ tomb. She had a difficult, sad job ahead: to finish preparing his body for burial. She wondered how she would move the heavy stone away from the tomb’s entrance.
But the stone had already been moved, and the tomb was empty. Soon after, Mary met a man she thought was a gardener. But when he said her name, she recognized that this person was Jesus. He was alive!
Jesus’ Resurrection is the center of our Christian faith. We want to have pictures of what happened, but that’s not possible because no other human being was there to see it. It’s a mystery. When artists depict the Resurrection, they use various symbols to help us understand its meaning.
In these pictures, light comes from Jesus. He still bears the wounds of his Crucifixion, as the Gospels tell us. Usually, he wears a white cloth. Jesus might be stepping out of a cave or even out of a sarcophagus, and we might see sleeping guards on the ground nearby. As Jesus steps forward, he might be trampling on bones or a snake, symbols of death and sin.
Some icons show Jesus emerging from Hades, the place of the dead. Images will depict Jesus coming out of Hades, often pulling people up with him. In some pictures, these people are Adam and Eve. There might be a creature down below in chains, which symbolizes death, over which Jesus won the victory. Keys and broken chains indicate the souls that Jesus has set free. Often, Jesus carries a banner with a cross on it, another symbol of the victory he has won for us.

He is Risen! Alleluia!!!
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered His head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. —John 20:6-8
The Lord is risen! It is the miracle of all miracles! Jesus has overcome death! The disciples couldn’t understand at first what had happened because no one had ever risen from the dead before, and we might not be able to understand it either. But the resurrection is a promise that our life doesn’t end in death. There is something more waiting for us on the other side. Jesus has bought us eternal life! What an awesome God who always loves us!
Prayer: Thank you for such a gift, Lord! We praise You! May you and your family be blessed with God’s abundant graces on this Easter Sunday!

The 46th Annual 8 mile Pro-Life Prayer Walk will be on Good Friday, April 15. It will start at 7:45 at St Martin of Tours Church in San Jose and end at Our Lady of Peace Church in Santa Clara around 12:00 noon. There will be a sag wagon for assistance and one rest stop with restrooms. A pen-itential meal will be served at the end and transportation will be provided back to St. Martin of Tours.
