So Much To Do, With Too Few Days
Greetings, everyone!

With only 28 days in February, this month has been a sprint instead of the usual marathon.

Not only is February jammed packed with celebrations and observations like Groundhog Day, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Susan B. Anthony’s birthday, National Flag of Canada Day, Presidents’ Day, Mardi Gras, African American History Month and my brother’s birthday, but February is also a month of hard work and trying to settle into a productive routine as we prepare for another successful school year.

This past week, we celebrated National Engineers Week (EWeek). I’d like to highlight that through the hard work and dedication of many (but with a special shout out to Cindy Jones and Baillie Miller) Governor Mark Gordon signed the state of Wyoming’s Professional Engineers Week 2022 proclamation on February 16, 2022. This week, 3,123 of Wyoming’s 6,883 third graders, are participating in Engineers Week activities, thanks to Cindy Jones’ tireless efforts. Way to go, Cindy!

Our Susan McCormack Center for Student Success Career Services team wrapped up a busy month and a busy week as they prepped students for this week’s Spring 2022 Engineering & Technology Job Fair and the BIG Job Fair. You know, before I became an engineer, I wanted to become a professional fisherman but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income. Da-dum-da-dum! Thank you, I’ll be here all week! 😊

On a more serious note, this has also been the first full week where masks were no longer required in most indoor spaces at UW, following a vote last week by the UW Board of Trustees. I know this is worrisome to many of you, but we’ll do our best to keep abreast of the COVID-19 rates and be ready to ask for a change in policy if it becomes necessary.

I know it can be easy to become bogged down with everything that is happening around us, but I encourage you to continue to get involved with the College, and with the University, so that we all can keep moving forward and supporting each other. It’s like pulling oars in a really big boat; if we don’t pull together, we either don’t get anywhere or we spin in circles. I’m hoping to move forward and make this a better place for all of us.

As always, I thank you for all that you have done; for all that you continue to do; and I look forward to all that has yet to be accomplished together.

Warm regards,
Cameron Wright's Signature

Managing Stress For Positive Change
In the workplace, stress is often viewed in purely negative terms—it's seen as a response that should simply be minimized or pushed aside. However, it's possible to use stress to fuel positive change.

In this course, join instructor Heidi Hanna, PhD, as she discusses what exactly stress is, how you can train yourself to use stress in more effective ways, and what managers can do to reduce employee stress when an organization experiences difficult times. She covers how individuals can use stress for good by assessing and adjusting it, as well as what you, as a manager, can do to create an environment and communication style that helps connect employees to the bigger picture.

PETE/CHE Researchers Have Studied Phase Transition and Criticality of Methane Confined in Nanopores for the First Time
Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering Morteza Dejam’s and Professor of Chemical Engineering Hertanto Adidharma’s PhD students, Huan Yang and Kevin Jayaatmaja, experimentally have measured the phase transition and criticality of methane confined in nanoporous media for the first time in literature. The measurement has been performed by establishing an experimental setup in Dejam’s phase behavior research laboratory utilizing a state-of-the-art differential scanning calorimeter capable of operating under very low/high temperatures (-196 to 200 oC) as well as high pressures (up to 600 bar). A mathematical model has also been developed to predict the phase transition of nanoconfined methane, which is in agreement well with the experimental results. This study, which has been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, finds extensive applications in recovery of hydrocarbons from unconventional reservoirs, surface and subsurface gas storage, separation, and drug delivery. The recently published journal article in Langmuir (Yang et al., 2022) describes this work in details.
