Celebrating 25 Years of the Heritage Home Program!
2017 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Heritage Home Prog ram

When the Heritage Home Program began in 1992, it was available to residents in two historic districts in the City of Cleveland.  Over the years, the program has grown and now, 25 years later,  serves 17 wards in the City of Cleveland, and is operating in 38 other communities in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lorain, Lucas and Summit Counties.  This anniversary year will be an opportunity to look back upon our successes and determine how the Heritage Home Program is relevant today.

The Heritage Home Program has not only expanded in size and territory, but has also grown to accommodate the needs of homeowners in response to the Great Recession and lasting effects of the housing crisis.  As we follow our mission to use the powerful tool of historic preservation to revitalize our diverse communities, strengthen the regional economy, and enhance the quality of life in northeastern Ohio, we will also pledge to respond to present day needs in your communities.  Going forward, the program will promote sustainability, energy efficiency and tools to combat vacant and abandoned housing.

This year, we look forward to sharing our history with everyone currently involved with the program. We will be highlighting achievements and reflecting on successes throughout the year.  Look for a special issue of Facade, our bi-annual magazine, to be dedicated to the Heritage Home Program and other 25th Anniversary related themes in 2017.

Thank you for your continues support as we navigate the next 25 years!
Before & After: This property on Wade Park Avenue in Cleveland was saved and rehabilitated in 1995 with technical assistance and financing through the program.
Frequently Asked Question
Energy Efficiency in Older Homes

As we continue through the depths of winter in Northeast Ohio, many homeowners call the Heritage Home Program for advice on how to weatherize and improve energy efficiency in their older homes. A site visit from our construction specialist can be a helpful place to start. From discussing approaches to weatherizing walls without ripping into original plaster, to learning more about the pros-and-cons of blown-in insulation or installing batt insulation below the roof of an attic space, Heritage staff can assist with guiding homeowners through the process and provide contact information for companies who may be able to bid out their work.

Repairing existing windows and installing user-friendly storm windows offer additional cost and energy saving benefits, but some homeowners are not sure where to look for custom-made options that can fit their historic window frames. The Heritage Home Program maintains a database of contractors who work in your service area and have completed projects with homeowners through the program in the past. Starting with a site visit to discuss options, followed by sharing contact information for your homeowners' specific projects, positions each homeowner to get the job done.

Anytime a homeowner calls your office with questions about their old home repair and maintenance projects, please direct them our way!
