Live, In-Person Service Protocols

Both Sunday services at Grace St. Paul’s — 7:45 and 10 a.m. — are live and in-person. The 10 a.m. service will also continue to be live-streamed.

To insure the safety of all present, these are the steps being taken:

Windows and doors to the outside are opened throughout the service.
Merv 13 air filters have been installed.
Pews are marked for seating locations, insuring 6 feet distance between family groups.
Service time is under 75 minutes.
Maximum seating capacity allowed is 200.
All congregants must wear a mask, properly worn over nose and mouth.
Congregational singing is now allowed with masks on.
Communion is served in one kind.
Children and youth and the nursery will meet outside and in McBride Hall, with the swamp cooler running to provide 100% air from the outside.
Only those who have been fully vaccinated should attend services in person.

Parents, please note. The nursery is staffed every Sunday in the Undercroft for the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Kids can be dropped off as early as 9:40 a.m. Nursery is for infants-age 3. Kids are welcome to enjoy church with their families in the Sanctuary.

A Community Celebration of Life/Memorial/Burial and Installation of Plaques for our Companion Animals,

10-23-21 at 3pm

Let's honor our deceased companion animals during the Season of Creation as a community by burying your animal's cremains/ashes in our Animal Memorial Garden. And/or memorializing them with a plaque on our Memorial Wall. On Saturday, October 23 at 3:00 p.m. Grace St. Paul’s will be having its annual service to celebrate the life of companion animals through the burial of ashes/cremains in the Animal Memorial Garden. If you would like to participate, please call the church office (520-327-6857) to let us know that you’re coming. The Animals and Spirituality Ministry will provide for the memorial plaque for the memorial wall if the cost is a concern. so please call the church office and order your memorial plaque or contact Reverend Chris. If you do not wish to bury your companion animal at this time, please consider ordering a plaque through the church office for installation on the memorial wall. All those who are mourning the death of companion animal(s) are invited to attend. Many people have commented on the healing result of this special service for our deceased companion animals. There will be social distancing and masks will be required. Any questions feel free to contact Reverend Chris through the Church office, at 520- 327-6857.

Día de los Muertos and Samhain (Celtic Festival of the Dead)

Join us for a unique service celebrating Tucson’s combined Irish and Mexican heritage. It will feature a Celtic liturgy as well as the creation of a “virtual ofrenda” or Día de los Muertos altar. Participants are invited to send to [email protected] (by Monday, Nov. 4^th) digital pictures of loved ones who have died, or of mementos of them to display “on” our “virtual Ofrenda”. A picture taken with your phone (or scanned) will work fine.

If any who are not on the weekly Spirit Now email list and would like a copy of the bulletin for this service sent to them by email before the service, send a note requesting this to [email protected] by October 28^th.

IN ADDITION … Spirit Now is coordinating the creation of a “tangible” Ofrenda in the Sanctuary as is our usual custom, which will remain in the chancel from the Feast of All Saints Sunday, November 7^th through Sunday, Nov. 14^th. If anyone wishes to place on that Ofrenda pictures or mementos of loved ones, or donate Mums, feel free to add them in the 15 minutes before the service you attend on Nov. 7^th. We are celebrating the Creation Season through November, and special services being planned on the theme of Caring for Creation on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18 (though we are taking Thanksgiving Day off).

More Information on Afghan resettlement

We are working with Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest who will be providing information regarding how we can help. You may register with them at www.lss-sw.org/afghanistan-help to show your interest in volunteering

So far their office in Tucson is expecting 9 people by this weekend. The arrival information is fluid as these people need to get their medical and other papers in order before being eligible for resettlement.

For donating household goods or furniture, please contact Jean Pascal at [email protected]. No mattresses will be accepted.

If you are interested in their co-sponsorship program, please email Jessica O’ Donnell at [email protected]. This program requires training which is given by Lutheran Social Services.

If you have other questions, email Jill Jenkins at [email protected] and she will try to answer them or refer you to someone at LSS-SW.

Reading Between The Lines

Thursdays on Zoom: 10:00-11:30 am

Come to the GSP website, click Virtual Services & Meetings, go to Thursday morning and select Reading Between The Lines for a class on a lectionary passage for the upcoming Sunday.

There are no prerequisites. You do not need to have taken “Bible 101.” No preliminary knowledge of the Bible is needed. Join other GSP people and guests who gain understanding and connection with one another as we focus on ancient texts that come to life in the here and now. I love these guidelines for this kind of study: “There is no expectation that you explain, justify or defend anything you say,” and “The goal is not consensus, agreement or a right answer,” and finally, “You can change your mind as often as you like.”

I especially invite anyone who has never been involved with “Bible study.” Take a risk and try

something new. Come and try it for a few sessions before deciding if this is right for you. If you would like to attend, send me your email so I can forward a study guide for that particular Thursday. In fact, if you would like to see the curriculum” without attending, I would be happy to send “with no strings attached.”

Anti-Racism

Study Group

In response to GSP's vision of social justice, the church's “anti-racism to ally” group has been endeavoring to live into its vision through focusing on social justice. The group has focused on writings regarding racism and white privilege, and aims to "move from anti-racism to ally."

Book Study: Self-Revelation — East and West, Carl Jung and the Tao

Dr. John Dore offers a weekly book study on Sundays at 5 p.m. in the Bloom Room titled: Self-Revelation — East and West, Carl Jung and the Tao.

We begin with the question: “what exactly are we as human beings?” We’ll explore

two ways of responding to the question — Karl Jung’s vision of human nature and with

Taoist beliefs and practices, begun by Lao Tzu, about human consciousness.

This brings up questions like “who am I really?”; a ‘human-doing’ or ‘human-thinking

machine’? “When can I just BE without thinking, doing something?”

The study offers an introduction to Jung’s comprehensive psychology, applying it to

issues that arise. In pondering the Tao we learn the key principles of Taoism. Each

session includes a brief teaching on the book material (often a poem), a discussion of

the most engaging ideas (all sharing is voluntary), as well as some hands-on

experience of these ideas. This includes breathing techniques, meditations (both silent

and guided), viewings of art, audiotapes, and perhaps movement like QiGong.

MIGRANT JUSTICE

Migrant Monday!

As the number of asylum-seekers increases at the Casa Alitas shelter, the GSP Migrant Ministry is stepping up our support. We will meet in-person on the second (Oct 11) and fourth (Oct 25) Mondays, 4:30-5:30, in McBride Hall to assemble snack packs for the many migrants leaving Casa Alitas for their U.S. sponsors' homes. Our packs give them nourishment during their long trips. No soup or other food is needed. Please join us! Many hands make light work.

A Prayer Vigil is held every first (Oct 4) and third Monday (Oct 18), 4:30-5:30 p.m. for migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and those threatened with deportation.

Prayers may be offered in Spanish and English.

Artisans Beyond Borders, (ABB) a bi-national ministry at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, began in 2019 as a way to bring trauma-informed arts & activities to asylum-seekers & their families waiting in shelters & on the streets in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

Now in 2021, in the shadow of politics & a pandemic, therapeutic arts & the dignity of artisanal craft continue to bring comfort to the traumatized & hope to asylum-seekers. Bordando Esperanza – Embroidering Hope, the flagship program, also helps restore personal agency & income through Etsy shop sales of artisans’ original hand-embroideries.
