Serious About Getting Our Hands Dirty

For those who farm year 'round, this weekend is just one phase of the growing season. For others across the country, this weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and the few days when it's finally ideal to get things into the ground. For students, today holds a welcome few (or more) hours to get finishing touches on that assignment due tomorrow, or invest an extra day to lock in content for that final exam. We hope everyone uses the day, in a pursuit meaningful to you, wherever you are. IHN's administrative team and faculty, for both our in-class and online programs, will be back tomorrowTuesday May 25.

An Excerpt From IHN's Fermentation Foundations Continuing Education Course!

On Monday May 17, 2021 IHN hosted a 1 hour webinar with Kathrin Brunner and Andrew Hodge, where participants followed along, making “Dilly Kraut”. During the lesson, they took an in-depth look at the deeply therapeutic benefits of fermented foods. While fermentation has gained in popularity over the years, there are many misconceptions about how they impact our microbiomes and are used to improve health. Knowing which type of ferment, would benefit which type of condition, is essential to recommending them successfully in clinical practice. Ingredients + full recipe for the "Dilly Kraut" is at the YouTube link below!

Herbal Applications For Spring Detoxification

In this lecture, Fiona Smulders explores springtime herbal allies that can help us to rejuvenate and energize our bodies. This is the best time of year to support our detoxification pathways by gently balancing our organs of elimination, and also the time when most of the detoxifying herbs become available for harvest. This is a fun and fascinating lecture on medicinal herbs and their healing properties. You will learn the best herbs to assist in detoxification, how to use them for your own healing, as well as how to identify these powerful herbs in the wild.

“Everything starts with anatomy and physiology! Deepening the students' understanding of how the body works will help form clear-cut nutrition and lifestyle recommendations that work.”

We asked Patricia what she loves about IHN and teaching her courses:

“I love making science fun and seeing that “ah-ha” moment on student’s faces when they connect the dots on how fascinating and complex the human body is.”

"As an alumna and faculty of IHN, I’m happy to continue to work with such a great organization. They offer a well-designed curriculum with a diverse range of instructors that have different educational backgrounds and experiences. IHN stays up to date with the current information in the field of nutrition and healthy lifestyle.”

How It Affects Our Mental Health

Regardless of your love-hate relationship with it, social media plays a role in our lives. Whether it's for business or personal use, how social media affects our mental health is influenced by how and why we use these platforms. A study by Derrick Wirtz, Ph.D., a professor of psychological science at the University of British Columbia, found that although most use social media to stay connected, passive scrolling leaves us feeling lonely. In a November 4, 2020 MindBodyGreen article (3 minute read), “Study Identifies The Social Media Behavior That’s Most Harmful To Well-being,” Wirtz confirms, “passive use involves little person-to-person reciprocal interaction…while providing ample opportunity for upward comparison."

Native to Mexico and Guatemala, chia is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.” An ancient grain and functional food, these tiny seeds are packed with essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fibre. When chia seeds are soaked in liquid they become gelatinous, absorbing ten times their weight in water. Chia helps to increase satiety, balance blood sugar, prevent cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory and nervous system disorders, and diabetes. Try this delicious Chia Pudding recipe from IHN graduate Hema Ramsingh.
