Please join Beth Rendeiro for a presentation and discussion on the attitudes and values of human sexuality in American culture.
Human beings are sexual for their entire lifespan. This does not necessarily mean that we are sexually active for all those years, just that we have a physical body with chromosomes, organs and hormones, an identity, an orientation, and all the feelings associated with these aspects of ourselves.
Beth Rendeiro, a fifth-generation MDI summer resident, has been teaching comprehensive sexuality education for over thirty years. She has experience constructing curriculums and teaching courses for children, teens, and adults, and has implemented teaching programs in schools, agencies, churches, and private settings.
This event is free and open to everyone.

Abe Miller-Rushing, Science Coordinator at ANP, and Brian Henkel, Wild Acadia Coordinator, will discuss Acadia National Park's Resist-Accept-Direct approach to managing the impact of climate change on the Park.
Acadia National Park is measurably different than it was at its founding 105 years ago.
|
|
Temperatures have warmed, rainfall has intensified, snowpack has diminished, and sea level has risen. These types of changes are likely to continue or even accelerate and they have dramatic but sometimes difficult to see impacts on the natural and cultural resources of the Park. This discussion will focus on the changes we’ve seen in the park, changes we anticipate in the near term, the Resist-Accept-Direct framework, and some examples of how that framework is applied.
This event is free and open to the public.

Tom Duym will present the fascinating story of how students at Deer Isle-Stonington High School contributed to their community's unique history and the role it played in the America's Cup at the end of the 19th century. In 1895, and again in 1899, emissaries from the New York Yacht Club traveled to Deer Isle to recruit crews to sail in the America’s Cup who were undefeated in their two campaigns.
Given from the perspective of one of the teachers involved in the project, the talk will tell the extraordinary story of how this small island community became famous for holding up the US dominance of worldwide yacht racing and how the present-day students and teachers reconnected with the significance of that time in history and their own friends, relations, and community reputation today.
This event is free and open to the public.

Curriculum Committee - Recruiting ASC Instructors for Classes You Love
|
|
Report from Mary Vekasi, Curriculum Committee member
The heart of Acadia Senior College is our courses and instructors. My life has been so enriched by classes that have led me to increased understanding, new passions, fun hobbies, and a lot of pleasure. Learning keeps me lively and aware of my world through the adventurous ASC teachers that share their passion from sailing to opera and writing to history.
The Curriculum Committee recruits teachers and filters the courses needed to maintain this rich and vibrant volunteer-run institution. It is a fun and passionate group of members that meet each term to review submitted Course Proposals, put together the course brochure, advertise our offerings, arrange meeting sites, and, together with Janice and the Technology Committee, work out the kinks of using Zoom.

|
|
Our main job, though, is the care and feeding of teachers and courses. Please consider teaching a course and submitting a proposal. The Course Proposal Form is always available on the ASC website or choose the “FOR INSTRUCTORS” tab. Potential instructors are encouraged to reach out with questions to the ASC office at learn@acadiaseniorcollege.org, or to the Curriculum Committee chair, Charles Stanhope, at csta482@me.com.
Remember - all ASC members are encouraged to be ambassadors for the curriculum, to suggest potential instructors and subjects, and… to teach your own course!
