Globalize DC

Dear Friends:

We are all living through an extraordinary chapter in American history - one which offers great peril and great opportunity. Globalize DC is in the process of determining the most productive role we can play moving forward. You'll hear from me about this soon.

In the meantime, here are a few opportunities I want to share with our community.

SBOE: DC Social Studies Standards Advisory Committee
Application Deadline: June 12, 2020
The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) is embarking on a much-needed review and revision of DC social studies standards that will guide PK-12 social studies teaching in all DC public schools (DCPS and charter). The Board's mandate is to create standards that are "culturally inclusive and anti-racist, impart important social studies content in the early grades, strengthen student knowledge of democratic principles and values, and promote civic education." The Board is now inviting applications from interested social studies educators, students, parents, community members, and representatives of partner organizations to be members of an advisory committee to inform the revision of DC's social studies standards. This work could not be more timely or important. Globalize DC is particularly interested in adding voices to ensure the inclusion of global content, perspectives, and competencies as these new standards are written.

Buy Our Japan in DC Book
Japan in DC is the culminating product of our Japan in DC summer program, in which teen participants explored the city to learn about the many ways that Japan has a presence in DC. This beautiful 128-page full-color paperback is filled with articles, photos, and artistic expressions that will give you new insights into the US-Japan relationship and what it means to be a global city. We're very disappointed that COVID-19 has forced us to postpone our plans for in-person Japan in DC book events. For now, we strongly encourage you to purchase a copy online at www.globalizedc.org/japan-in-dc-book. Your purchase will not only give you a great read, but all proceeds from book sales will be used to support future Globalize DC student programs.
