Still Waters Adult Day Center News & Updates
Still Waters Adult Day Center is a person centered, faith based, and activity rich center for our seniors. We provide a safe place Monday - Friday for seniors to engage with other seniors to encourage social, emotional, and physical well-being.
The Benefits Of Music Therapy For Our Guests
Music has the power to uplift our spirits, whether we are going through good times or bad times. Regardless of our age, music can stimulate strong feelings and emotions. It should be no surprise that music therapy has the power to help improve the lives of people in a variety of ways. Several studies conducted worldwide have shown the benefits of music therapy for seniors in particular.
The benefits are endless from helping with speech skills, sharpening memory enhancement, improving physical skills, and stress reduction.
Music therapy for seniors is beneficial in many ways as it helps keep their minds and bodies active. We know that music boosts people’s spirits, but it has also been proven to improve people’s overall physical, mental and emotional well-being.
At Still Waters we are blessed to have Rachel Williams provide music therapy to our guests bi-weekly. Through her music our guests stay active and well. She brings music from their era so everyone sings along. It is a blessing to see our guests tapping their feet. clapping their hands, grooving in their seats, and smiling from ear to ear!
A few weeks ago, we had a new guest join us. As our musician from the intergenerational program was sharing with the group her violin the guest reached out to the violin. To everyone's surprise the guest took the violin placed it under her chin and began playing the most amazing song.
It is no wonder we are all drawn to music because it ‘expresses our feelings when words fail us.’ With dementia the music centers are usually the last to stop functioning.

Alzheimer's Foundation of America
Last week we attended the Alzheimer's Foundation of America's caregiver conference. We walked away with some great knowledge that we wanted to share with other caregivers. Below are some amazing resources I wish I had when I was a caregiver. We will have paper copies available at the center in a couple of weeks.

Caregiver Spotlight- Shanelle and Lelola
Ms. Lelola has been a Still Water's guest for nearly 4 years. Shanelle her daughter noticed her mom's decline around the house on various visits. She noticed the home wasn't as clean as usual and she was repeating herself on various conversations. After she took her to various medical appointments, she discovered her mother had dementia. Shanelle wanted to support her mother since she supported her all her life. She moved in with her mother to assist her with her daily living skills. She realized that her mother needed more than just her company. She was becoming withdrawn and lethargic around the home. A friend recommended Still Waters. Shanelle knew her mother would thrive in an environment with other seniors that encouraged mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Since Ms. Lelola has attended Still Waters Shanelle feels that her dementia has improved. She is blessed to have Still Waters to support not only her mother but her too! She appreciates the ability to run errands and work knowing her mother is in good care.
If you know someone that might benefit from Still Waters, please share our information with them. Still Waters supports the entire family!
AARP Community Garden
If you haven't had a chance you need to swing by and check out our community garden. We have 5 of the 6 boxes adopted by the community. The garden looks amazing. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, cabbage, watermelon, herbs, squash, and so many other delicious vegetables. The purpose of the garden is to create a space to make new friendships and improve our mental and physical well-being. It is a place to provide a community. I love watching new 'farmers' harvesting their boxes. It was fun to teach the new 'farmers' how to plant the various plants but now as they grow to watch their faces as they harvest their first tomato or cucumber is priceless!
One of our guests talked about canning when she was younger and all the joy, she had doing this with her family. So, the following day we canned our cucumbers! What a joy it is listening to all the stories from our guests as they reminisced about canning when they were younger.
Don't forget to check out the table by the desk to pick up some of our fresh produce!
