It May Be Summer, But Caltrain Doesn't Take Vacations

Caltrain is gaining steam as we head into the summer months, and our riders are glad to hear it. Frequent service continues throughout the day to support the ever-increasing crowd sizes we see coming back to the system, especially for local sporting and other large events.

Electrification is making consistent progress, with many important milestones expected over the next several months. In July, our first electric trainset successfully underwent clearance testing along the Corridor between Santa Clara and Tamien stations. The next major test for the new electric trains is expected to take place later this year, when the trains will operate under their own power via the Overhead Catenary System.

We applaud the good news out of Sacramento that the recently enacted budget will set aside substantial resources to support public transportation systems, at least $900 million of which is reserved for capital projects like Caltrain Electrification.

Caltrain is still proudly running 104 trains every weekday with robust midday and evening service, so however you’re spending your summer, take the time to get yourself on board. Wherever you’re going, Caltrain is the best way to get there.

New Electric Train Undergoes Clearance Testing

Caltrain’s Centralized Equipment, Maintenance and Operations Facility (CEMOF) has received an upgrade. Modifications were made in preparation for electrification including extending the vehicle pit, creating a component test room, and installing a movable platform to allow for inspection and maintenance of the new electric trains. These improvements are already being put to good use with the first two of the 19 electric trainsets.

Caltrain Hosts Meeting on Broadway Burlingame Grade Separation Project

On Wednesday, July 13, Caltrain hosted a virtual community meeting on the Broadway Burlingame Grade Separation Project to discuss the aesthetics of the project. The Broadway railroad crossing has high traffic volumes, resulting in some of the worst traffic congestion in the region. The safety improvement project will separate the train tracks from the road; reduce train gate down-time and horn noise; improve overall system operations; and improve traffic flow. The project will also construct a new elevated Broadway Station with updated amenities that better serve the community.

Work Begins on Bayshore Station Overpass

Work on Caltrain’s Bayshore Station Overpass Rehabilitation Project is under way. Workers are setting up a temporary containment system that will allow the use of the pedestrian bridge, station, and train tracks at all times and protect passengers and the community from dust and debris from construction activities. This project will remove and replace the coating on the station’s pedestrian bridge and stairwells and is expected to be complete by November of this year. The overpass will remain open to pedestrians during construction, with half the walkway under construction at a time. Thank you to the state and San Francisco Prop K funds for making this $6.87 million project possible.

California Budget Brings Good News for Transit

Caltrain and its supporters celebrated the signing of the Fiscal Year 2022-23 California Budget Act, which includes a historic $10.9 billion funding package for state transportation programs. The new budget includes $1.5 billion for transit and intercity rail capital projects in Northern California, with at least $900 million of that amount reserved for projects like Caltrain Electrification, that have previously received state funding, and are seeking to maintain existing or leverage new federal funding. Additional funding from the state budget will be critical to helping Caltrain complete the project by 2024.

Pride Provides Ridership Numbers to be Proud of

The San Francisco Pride Parade has long been a major destination for people throughout the Bay Area. Caltrain saw over 10,000 riders on Sunday, June 26, an impressive turnout of riders looking to celebrate their pride while enjoying the sunshine. Caltrain is already looking forward to getting attendees up to San Francisco for the big show next year.

In light of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Bay Area, Caltrain is monitoring the situation and following local public health agencies and CDC guidance regarding public meetings.
Caltrain is implementing a bold service vision for the future with a series of infrastructure and planning projects to modernize the system. Central among these projects is Electrification, which lays the foundation for a faster, greener, cleaner, and more reliable system for everyone.
