PEORIA (April 16, 2022) – Fly on over and join Peoria Zoo as it celebrates Bat Appreciation Day on Saturday, April 16th. The community is invited to be a part of this special program day in order to raise awareness about the important roles bats play within the ecosystem and ways to help protect them further from potential extinction.
The Zoo will be celebrating by offering activities all day inside the Tropics Classroom. The Zoo is open from 10am - 5pm, with last admission at 4:30pm.
At Peoria Zoo, you can find the Great Spear-Nosed Bat in the Tropics Building.
Did you know that bats are:
- An important pollinator and seed-disperser of certain tropical trees.
- The world’s only true flying mammal.
- Have reasonably good eyesight, but they use echolocation to navigate. They emit high frequency clicking sounds up to 200/second. The sound waves strike objects in their way and an echo is returned to the bat. This allows them to judge distances between itself and objects.
The Conservation Status of Bats: Of little concern in the wild according to the IUCN.
