Beloveds
I am preaching at the Chalice UU congregation in Escondido this Sunday and will be revisiting a sermon I gave for UUSS in January 2022 featuring the ideas of the science fiction author Octavia Butler. Her heroine in the Parable of the Sower preaches a theology of change:
All that you touch/You Change
All that you Change/Changes you
The only lasting truth/Is Change
God/Is Change
If you are curious you can read the sermon, or watch a video of the service on our website.
Living with change, coping with change, even thriving amongst change is our challenge in these times. At UUSS we have been blessed with significant stability in our staff for the past several years. Their consistency has helped us navigate the pandemic and transition through all the recent changes. But change has now come as some of our staff are moving on to new opportunities or meeting obligations. Michele Ebler, our amazing bookkeeper, is leaving us to take a position at San Juan Unified School District. This is a promotion for her and a great opportunity. Jesus Hoyos, our trusted custodian, is leaving us because of childcare needs in his family. We wish them both all the best in their new situations. Please reach out to them with appreciation for their service.
As the minister responsible for administration, it is my job to ensure that we fill these positions with capable staff that will serve the congregation well. So I am taking deep breaths, and opening my mind to a vision of the new individuals who will become part of our staff. We are recruiting for both positions at this time, with hopes for a great outcome. There will be some transitional bumps along the way, but with patience and a good attitude, we will get back to full operation and make the most of any new opportunities that come our way.
The only lasting truth is change. Let’s navigate the waters of change together.
Sending love to all,

Our longtime bookkeeper Michele Ebler will be leaving us at the end of the month to take a position with the San Juan School District. We are grateful for her 16 years of dedicated and creative service. She will be very hard to replace. Please send her your appreciations to michele@uuss.org. Her last day is July 29. A search for her replacement has begun. If you know of someone who might be a good fit for the position, contact Rev. Lucy.
Due to family and childcare needs, Jesus Hoyos, our custodian will be leaving us as well. We have appreciated his hard work and positive attitude. If you see him on Sunday morning or on the campus in the next two weeks, please express you appreciation for all that he has done for us. We are in the process of finding a replacement.

What do they have in common: Hilary Clinton, Hilary Mantel, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Meacham, David Sedaris, and Ann Patchett? Each of these authors has had their recent best-selling and/or prize-winning books available in our UUSS Bookstore. At $1.00 each, what a bargain!
They are also typical of what you’ll find every Sunday - used, but in excellent condition - available to our members and guests. Also, recent magazines at 50 cents each. Enjoy the bookish atmosphere. Stop by and browse.

A Ride to Church—We occasionally get requests for rides from members without access to Paratransit. Can you give rides occasionally? (No heavy lifting.) Contact Rev. Roger by phone or email.

Join the Voter Outreach team
The next postcard writing campaign is starting! To Florida!
UU the Vote works with Reclaim Our Vote (ROV), a black-led organization working with local groups in Southern states and high-minority states like Arizona. They are using several methods to counter the "you can't vote" message that minority voters have received for generations and still receive. ROV has hired local people to register voters, and we writers and callers and texters will encourage those voters to go to the polls.
Reclaim Our Vote plans to analyze data from three Florida counties to determine the effectiveness of our writing.
It's Easy to Participate and Make a Difference
Our member Sue Jones is leading this effort. Let her know how many cards you want to write, in multiples of 20. she's requesting $1 per 20 names to cover the cost of cards, labels, script and names. You can pick them up from her porch in East Sacramento at any time; the porch is available 24/7. She also has porch pickup locations (dedicated volunteers) in Carmichael, Folsom, and Lincoln if any of those cities are closer to you.
Channel your frustration and join us!
