Diversity Dinner

Saturday, March 30, 6 p.m.

Diversity Dinners are Back!

We hope you will consider joining us for an opportunity to get to know each other over dinner and conversation! Our diversity dinners are an effort to find connection and maybe even share how we are doing working and living here in Utah. The dinners are meant to be a safe and brave place for all people to reflect on and explore issues of inequality and inclusivity in our lives. Hearing people speak their truths is empowering and ultimately will make us better human beings and medical providers.

We plan to have the dinner on March 30th at 6pm. There are 10-12 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please RSVP by March 15th.

We order food from the IRC initiative, Spice Kitchen Incubator, called Spice To Go. The caterer changes weekly and is announced the Saturday before. We will let you know the caterer, food options, and dinner location once available.

Please RSVP by emailing Stuti Das, and let us know your meal preference/any dietary restrictions. If you have additional questions, please reach out to Stuti Das.

Sincerely,

David Branson, Stuti Das, Reena Tam, & Katie Gradick

ACADEMIC ASSOCIATES "BLUE COAT" PROGRAM - REMINDER

Dear PIs and Study Coordinators,

The Pediatric Research Education Office is accepting new research studies for its Academic Associates "blue coat" program. The Academic Associates Program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of clinical research and to conduct "real time" clinical research through consenting patients and their families into studies in the PCH Emergency Room (and other clinics at PCH and the U of U hospital).

Our mission is to provide this opportunity to students while supporting the research of the clinician scientists in our department. We are able to provide research support to PIs and study coordinators in the clinical setting as well as give opportunities for them to participate in didactic and mentoring sessions for the students.

If you or someone you know might be interested in utilizing the Academic Associates program for their research, please contact the Program Coordinator, Hadlee Young, for more information

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: AHSE SPRING 2024 GRANT PROGRAM - REMINDER

Dear Faculty,

We are pleased to announce the Spring 2024 Academy of Health Science Educators (AHSE) call for proposals. We invite proposals requesting $3,000 or less to support scholarships in health science education that lead to dissemination within a meaningful community of practice (local or beyond).

Educational Scholarship Defined

Scholarship in health science education is an inquiry that generates shareable knowledge about how, why, or when an educational intervention works. As such, the inquiry moves beyond the design and implementation of the intervention itself. Illustrative examples include:

  • Evaluation of a novel teaching methodology, course, or mentoring program that leads to shareable 'lessons learned'
  • Validation and dissemination of educational assessment methods others could adopt
  • Assessment of the impact that educational practices for students have on patient outcomes, which can inform the use of those practices elsewhere
  • Demonstration of the feasibility of an innovative teaching modality (e.g., virtual reality)

Eligibility

  • One of the applicants (principal or co-investigator) must be a University of Utah faculty member appointed to the career line or tenure-line at the rank of instructor or above (adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible)
  • Applicants (principal and co-investigator) must be a Fellow or Member of the Academy of Health Science Educators
  • The proposed inquiry must ultimately benefit learners in a formal academic program (e.g., health science students, residents, fellows, faculty, etc.). Programs within the hospital or clinic meant for training staff members or patients are not eligible.
  • Per the definition of scholarship above, programs limited to the design and/or implementation of interventions (curricula, assessments, teaching materials, etc.) are not eligible+.
  • +Proposals focused on the design and implementation of innovative teaching strategies may be eligible for funding from the University's Teaching Grant

Award condition

  • Up to $3,000 for 1 year
  • Nonrenewable
  • Preference given to interprofessional collaboration
  • Commitment to present at the annual AHSE Education Symposium. We also encourage recipients to disseminate (pre-print) the outcomes of their work in the newly created Journal of the Academy of Health Science Educators: Pre-print Repository of the University of Utah

Deadlines and Important Dates

  • Grant application deadline: Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 5pm MT
  • Grant application notifications sent at the beginning of June 2024
  • Funding starts July 1, 2024

What Patients are Saying

Patient comments are submitted via the Qualtrics after-visit survey.

John Bohnsack, MD - Rheumatology

"The Doctor was very caring and thorough.  He was knowledgeable and informed."

Fran Filloux, MD - Neurology

"Dr. Filloux is the most caring doctor [my daughter] has had. He is an excellent listener and is very compassionate and skilled."

Matt Grinsell, MD - Nephrology

"The doctor who saw me has always been very kind. They help me to understand what's going on with my treatment as well as help me feel at ease during the visit."

Diane Liu, MD - General Pediatrics

"Dr. Diane Liu is the ideal physician - she is attentive, extremely empathetic, obviously super intelligent, explains complex issues and problems succinctly and in language I can easily understand.  I always leave my children's appointments feeling confident and well cared for. She consistently follows up through MyChart with information I may have requested during appointments as well, which allows me to listen and be present during appointments instead of scribbling down notes. We are so grateful for everything she's done for our family and feel lucky to be able to see her."

Ngan Truong, MD - Cardiology

"She listened to every question and didn't make me feel rushed. She explained very well. I liked her a lot. I felt very comfortable with her and confident in her care."

Kate Weirich, NP - Gastroenterology

"Kathryn Weirich is a very caring practitioner. We don't have answers yet, which makes this survey a bit premature, but I feel like she is doing what she can to get us closer to them. We have felt cared for, seen, and heard."
