September Maintenance Guidelines 
  • Get ready for mums, pansies and kale fall plantings!
  • Pumpkins will be in soon! Call your local store to check on arrival dates!
  • Plant your container and evergreen trees.
  • Select your deciduous B & B (Ball and Burlap) trees for fall/winter planting.
  • Last nitrogen fertilizer application of the year on warm-season grasses should be applied no later than September 15th.
  • Apply ferti-lome F-STOP for brown patch disease on fescue grass.
  • Apply Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone III to keep short tailed crickets and white grubs away all season long.
  • Pre-emerge using Sure Green Sandbur & Crabgrass Preventer containing oryzalin (Surflan), ferti-lome For All Seasons II Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer containing prodiamine (Barricade) or Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper to keep annual blue grass (poa annua) from emerging plus other winter weeds. Apply by early September. NOTE: Do NOT treat areas that will be seeded in the fall for fescue lawns.
  • Seed bluegrass, fescue, or ryegrass as needed in shady areas in late-September through mid-October.
  • See Marcum's watering guidelines for plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Spring bulbs (tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, etc.) arrive in mid-September.

Build a Butterfly Feeder for the 
Monarch Migration

You'll need:
a plant tray or saucer
string
hole punch
beads
cut up fruit

Instructions:
  1. Using a hole punch, punch holes into a plastic plant tray and tie string or yarn through the holes in order to support the tray evenly when it is hanging.
  2. Decorate your tray or string with colorful beads.
  3. Cut up fruit for your tray. Some of the butterflies' favorite snacks are bananas, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches, apples and watermelon!
  4. Make sure to have your feeder ready by mid September for the annual monarch migration through Oklahoma!
