A Mindful Moment

Early spring; daffodils are giving way to tulips, different shades and textures of green are everywhere, forsythia has come and gone, and yes we can observe a thin veil of pollen on some surfaces.

What a wonderful time for awareness!  What a wonderful time to take a step back, as I often do, to bring a beginner’s mind to our practice, to awareness, to the present moment.  What is awareness? When is the best time to practice?  Is succumbing to the intoxicating aromas and sights of nature, awareness?  Mindfulness; awareness is that space, that incredible place that is always accessible… where we pause during an intense thought or conversation, where we breathe into that constriction or tightening sensation, where we hold ourselves, the people we love, and the world in lovingkindness.  Just now.

Nutrition Notes

Most of us are familiar with the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. They contain the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to be healthy.

Colorful fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants and phytonutrients that can prevent and fight diseases. They are full of fiber which helps our digestion and heart health.

To optimize our nutrition, we should look for locally-grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
These foods are fresher, are not transported long distances, and are usually picked at their peak of ripeness. Think of spring’s fresh asparagus from a local farmstand… freshly picked, crunchy, colorful, full of flavor and nutrients!

MEDITATION PRACTICE

This simple spring salad is perfect for enjoying fresh spring asparagus. This recipe from “The Daring Gourmet” calls for grilling the asparagus before adding to the salad. However, if your asparagus is very slender, use it raw in the salad - it will be tender and have a delicious light flavor and crunch.
