BFA Board of Director Meeting Summary - Dec. 2023

In partnership with Principal Simpson, the BFA Board of Directors is proud to work for the students, parents and patrons of BFA in promoting the mission and vision of the school. The following summarizes action taken during our December Board meeting.

Thank you to our student tech support for this month’s meeting: JD Kim (5th grade)!

BOD Updates:

Winter Break

Have a wonderful, relaxing and safe winter break! School will resume on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

Board Succession

In the Spring of 2024, the BFA community will elect (or re-elect) one (1) director and the current BFA Board will appoint one (1) director to serve on the volunteer seven-director Board. More details regarding the nomination and election/appointment process will be provided in January. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Adam Lucero or Keri Street.

Parent Surveys

Thank you to all that participated in the fall School Accountability Committee (SAC) survey focused specifically on the classroom environment(s). The SAC will present the results of that survey during our January Board meeting. It is anticipated that the annual spring survey will take place in February, 2024. Our SAC is putting in a lot of time and effort to ensure that we have a survey that is user-friendly, data driven and actionable. We hope to have a high volume of participation. Please stay tuned for additional information.

SAC Bylaws

The SAC sought to amend their bylaws in accordance with changes proposed by the District Accountability Committee. The Board reviewed the proposed changes and made modifications as were deemed appropriate. The amended SAC bylaws will be available on the website after Jan. 8, 2024.

Charter Renewal

The process of renewing our charter school contract continues. On Dec. 12, we attended the DCSD School Board meeting. Principal Simpson did an outstanding job presenting and showcasing all of the wonderful things happening at our school. The video that was shown to the Board is available on our website. In January, the DCSD Board will vote on whether to approve our charter renewal application. Thereafter, if approved, we will enter the contract negotiation process.

Financial Oversight:

Treasurer Sarah Nisbet provided the financial focus during the meeting. November financials were reviewed and recommended for approval by our Finance Committee. We remain focused on our financial health, including appropriate spending and quality investments. We are incredibly proud to have provided all of our staff with a holiday bonus.

The 2023/24 budget was reviewed and approved during our December meeting. Financial documents are made available on the Financial Transparency page of the BFA website.

Policy Governance:

The Board did not review any policies during the December meeting. No policies are currently scheduled to be reviewed in January.

Executive Session:

From time to time, you may see reference to an executive session on our agendas (as was the case for this month’s meeting). For those that may be curious, executive sessions allow the board to discuss and consider certain issues in private as enumerated by law. Those issues include (without limitation) confidential matters, security arrangements/ investigations, personnel issues or conferences with our attorney for the purpose of seeking legal advice. Due to the sensitive and private nature of these issues, these sessions are not open to the public. However, please know that no adoption of proposed policy, position, resolution, rule, regulation or formal action occurs at any executive session that is not open to the public.

Board BOLTS:

The Board and Principal Simpson recognize that there are BFA students who go above and beyond and achieve excellence in academics, character, effort and/or service. We are proud of these students and the characteristics they exemplify. Our Board BOLT for December is:

  • JD Kim (5th Grade)

If you would like to nominate a student to be recognized as one of our Board BOLTS in January, please use this nomination form.

January Board Meeting:

The next BFA Board of Director meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the Middle School Commons

Rapids

Colorado Rapids Attendance Incentive

We have partnered with the Colorado Rapids to reward and incentivize school attendance by giving students who have missed no more than two days of school, from Jan. 9 – March 1, a complimentary ticket to a Colorado Rapids match (with purchase of additional discounted tickets)

The Rapids boast one of the most family-friendly and fun gameday experiences in town. From celebrating the goals together, to the roar of the stadium crowd, to the hot dogs at halftime, Colorado Rapids games are where memories can be made. Students who qualify will receive a ticket link voucher to redeem their complimentary ticket with purchase of additional discounted tickets. Vouchers will be redeemable for select Spring dates, to be determined

Attention Preschool Families: We will begin using School Messenger for Communications

Last year, BFA moved our K-8 communications to School Messenger which is the primary messaging system used by the Douglas County School District (DCSD) as it pulls contact information directly from DCSD’s Infinite Campus (IC) system.

We'd like most BFA communications to go through the same messaging system, so beginning in January, we’ll begin sending general communications to preschool families through School Messenger, such as the Principal Newsletter, various reminders, and important notifications. All email communications from Mrs. Hafner and your preschool teachers will remain the same.

During the month of December, we'll send general school communications both through the legacy system and School Messenger to ensure parents are receiving our messages. If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Keen, communications manager.

You may also order a yearbook dedication (parent tribute ad) for your student. Dedications are $38 for 1/8 of page if you order by December 31. After that, the price for dedications will go up to $40 (from 1/1 until the last day to order, 1/31). These ads are a fun way to help commemorate a great school year!

This year, we will be using a new company, Jostens, for our yearbooks. You can order and pay for your 2023-24 yearbook, and your dedication now!

Important: Charges for Late Pick-up and Late BASE Registration

time_management.jpg

Due to an increase in students not picked up during afternoon carpool and not scheduled for Before/After School Enrichment (BASE), we will need to begin charging parents for late pick-ups. Generally, carpool and All Call end by 3:55 p.m. Parents are expected to pick up their students on time--in fact, we'd like parents to arrive on campus by 3:45 p.m. at the latest for afternoon pick-up. Students who are not registered for BASE and are not picked up by 4 p.m. will be charged $5 per student for the first offense and $10 per student for the second offense. Charges will continue to go up by $5 per student after each offense.

Furthermore, students not registered for BASE and not picked up by 4:15 p.m. will be charged an additional $2 per minute, per student beginning at 4:16 p.m.

Parents can sign up for BASE through MySchoolBucks. To find out more about BASE, see our webpage

In addition, we also are having trouble with parents missing the weekly (Friday) deadline to sign up for BASE in MySchoolBucks. Families will be charged $5 per student for the first offense and $10 per student for the second offense if they do not sign up their student(s) for BASE by the deadline. Charges will continue to go up by $5 per student after each offense.

For questions, please contact Jen Jones, office manager.

BFA's Guiding Principles
Mission:
Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.

Vision:
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social emotional development, character, sports, and nature.

13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
