An academic bilingual community fostering global citizenship
From the Principal
April 7, 2022

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

We hope that you are having a great week! It was so much fun to see our students come back to school on Monday!

Next week, our students in grades 3-5 will take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) for reading on Wednesday and Thursday. The following week, our students in grades 3-5 will take the MCA in math on Wednesday and Thursday.  These state assessments measure student achievement (and growth--for fourth and fifth graders) related to the Minnesota State Standards. Again this year, we will have all students take the tests at the same time (approximately 8:15-10:00) on Chromebooks. These (and many other assessments) help inform us of our students' learning.

Yesterday, we welcomed some of our incoming kindergarten families for next year. It was wonderful to learn more about them and to share our school with them. I look forward to having them join our community.

Have a great week, and keep reading!

Sincerely,

Corey

Grade 4 Talent Development - Elders' Wisdom

The fourth graders are busy preparing for our Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration.  This new project incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class interviewed an elder from the community and is now writing a song inspired by the elder’s life story. Families are invited to join us as the fourth graders honor these elders in a community celebration on Thursday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School.  Contact Sra. Wieber with questions at wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org.
Severe Weather Awareness Week - Statewide Tornado Drills
April 4-8 is Severe Weather Awareness Week

Annually, Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in collaboration with the National Weather Service sponsors Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. The week is designed to refresh, remind and educate everyone about the seasonal threats from severe weather and how to avoid them.

Students and staff in St. Louis Park Public Schools will participate in the daytime statewide tornado drill today (Thursday, April 7) at 1:45 p.m. Outdoor warning sirens will sound in a simulated tornado warning and students and staff will practice how to shelter in place.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota experiences an average of 29 tornadoes per year. In 2021, Minnesota recorded 64 tornadoes, including 22 on December 15 alone, which were the latest reported tornadoes on record. A record was set in 2010 with 113 tornadoes touching down across the state.
NEEDED: Family Size Cereal Boxes
Please send your (empty) family size cereal boxes to the school office!  We are gearing up for our Cartonera Writing Project. In preparation for this fun event where every student publishes a book, we are requesting empty family size cereal boxes.

We will also need people to help sew the books. It really only requires a sewing machine and the capacity to sew a straight(ish) line. If you are willing and able to assist in this way, please let Kara Scheid know (scheid.kara@slpschools.org).

Application to Host Now Open! Amity Intern - Fall of 2022
Each year PSI hopes to welcome eight Amity Interns from Spanish speaking countries who assist our teachers in the K-5 classrooms. These interns are either pursuing or have recently completed a college degree with an education focus, and are between the ages of 20-30 years old. Amity interns live with PSI host families one semester allowing both an opportunity for greater language learning and cultural exchange. Please consider hosting an Amity Intern for a semester. This is a unique and wonderful experience that can benefit your entire family. Plus, it's a great way to give back to the students, staff and entire community. Want more info? Please check out the FAQs or email us at psiamity@gmail.com.

Ready to sign up? Go to PSIparents.com, click Get Involved and select Amity Intern to find the Host Family application. Fill yours out today!

Not able to host, but interested in supporting the Amity program in another way? Become a cousin family. The cousin family is an extension of the host family and supports both the intern and their host family throughout the intern’s stay. This is most successfully achieved when the cousin family takes the initiative to reach out and communicate frequently with both parties. This effort allows families to build lasting connections with one another and brings a sense of community to the intern. The more involved the cousin family is with the intern the greater the opportunity is for language learning, cultural exchange and lasting relationships for all.

Go to PSIparents.com, click Get Involved and select Amity Intern to find more information about the Cousin role along with the Cousin application. Fill yours out today!

Thanks for considering these amazing opportunities!

Pavek Museum
Take a walk on the retro side at the Pavek Museum and explore one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of vintage radio and television equipment. Display highlights include an AEG Magnetophon, an RCA Theremin, a Spark Gap Generator and a Philco Mystery Control Radio. They even have a collection of vintage game consoles.

Opened in 1988, the Pavek preserves the history of electronic communication and provides education on the science of electromagnetism and sound. It features over 12,000 sq. ft. of antique radios, televisions and broadcast equipment, making it one of the largest and finest collections of its kind in the world. Much of the collection came from Joe Pavek, one of the museum’s founders and namesake. But donations from area radio and TV stations have enabled the museum to continue to expand its offerings.
