February Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

*When Oklahoma temps are over 40 degrees, apply our ferti-Lome Dormant Oil Spray to your deciduous trees and shrubs to control overwintering insects. NEVER use dormant oil sprays on evergreen trees or shrubs.

*Now through February, apply ferti-Lome Systemic Drench to your young pines for tip borers.

* Pre-emerge with EC Grow, Barricade or Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper (a summer annual herbicide) to turf areas through mid-March to prevent summer weeds such as crabgrass from germinating.

* Apply Marcum's Fertilizer 18-6-12 to all trees and shrubs.

*Apply Captan to peach and nectarine trees to prevent peach leaf curl before bud swell.

*Prune shade trees, summer flowering shrubs, and hedges.

*At the end of the month, start your garden seeds in a controlled environment to ensure readiness by the first week of April.

Chump's Chatter

The ______  weed variety is one of the most common and major weed problems for residential and commercial lawns in Oklahoma.

Each small plant can produce about 100 seeds in as few as ____ weeks.

Dahlia's Answer: Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua), eight weeks

Dahlia's Dirt!

Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua): This Is NOT A Festival!

Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) is commonly referred to at Marcum's Nursery as "Po anna." Due to its scientific name, Poa annua tells us this grassy weed is not only an annual, but also an annual nuisance to Oklahomans!

This common weed is a major problem for not only residential and commercial lawns in Oklahoma, but also in highly maintained turfgrasses used for sporting events world-wide.

February 5 is World Nutella Day!

Today marks the ninth anniversary for this worldwide celebration of pure hazelnut bliss.  It's a favorite snack of my daughter, Maggie, but it's even better that it falls on her birthday.

If you're a fan, spread the hazelnut joy with one of Maggie's favorite desserts. She claims everything tastes better with Nutella buttercream icing.
