SHPEP students learn about the health professions
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a six-week summer program for college freshmen and sophomores interested in the health professions.

Last week, SHPEP students received hands-on learning in optometry, dental medicine, physical therapy and osteopathic medicine from WesternU faculty and students.

WesternU College of Pharmacy team receives
$1.6 million NIH grant for skin cancer chemoprevention
Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy Associate Professor Ying Huang, PhD, and her team received a $1.6 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI) for a project, “Preventing UV-induced Immunosuppression and Skin Carcinogenesis with R-carvedilol.”

COMP Associate Professor Jerome Lacroix, PhD, (pictured right) and Drs. Tharaka D Wijerathne and Alper D Ozkan published the article "Yoda1’s energetic footprint on Piezo1 channels and its modulation by voltage and temperature" in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA).

This article has been edited by Pr. Ardem Patapoutian, the 2021 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine. 
COMP-Northwest Professor Brion Benninger, MD, MBChB, MSc, served as a keynote speaker at the International Cervical Spine Meeting, hosted in Stockholm, Sweden May 5-6, 2022 by Nackskadeförbundet. Professor Benninger’s presentation was titled, "Cervical Spine Anatomy - Buttressing Protection or Dynamic Anatomy Revealed: Medical Innovation, Challenging Concepts & Improved Terminology."

  1. The 2022-23 APhA-APRS (Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science) Policy Standing Committee, which advises and recommends on policy issues related to research and science.
  2. The 2022-23 AACP Professional Affairs Committee that will focus on developing a framework and workplan for the ACT (Academia-CPSEN Transformation) Pharmacy Collaborative to be integrated within the AACP Center for Practice Transformation.
  3. The AACP COD/COF Faculty Workload Reimagined Joint Task Force that will develop a toolkit for the Academy to identify best practices in setting faculty workload expectations.
