American Clean Power's Offshore Wind Conference in Boston

During American Clean Power's Offshore Wind Conference in Boston this month, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced the nation's path forward to achieve 30GW of offshore wind by 2030. This includes seven lease auctions by 2025 including areas off the coasts of Maine, California, Oregon, and the first of which will be the waters in the NY bight to be auctioned in Q1 2022.

I attended the conference and was able to connect with the President of the Massachusetts Building Trades Council, Frank Callahan, and hear about his success in negotiating a PLA for the first American commercial-scale offshore wind project, Vineyard Wind. I also met with colleagues from National Grid, Avangrid Renewables, Equinor, EnBW North America, and made new contacts from across the country. The conference drove the point home that we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a robust offshore wind industry with good union jobs.

Submitted comments on Sunrise

CJNY submitted comments and I testified during the BOEM Notice of Intent Public Scoping hearing for Sunrise Wind. This is one of five offshore wind projects in NY—each of which will go through a thorough environmental review and have the opportunity for public input. The Sunrise Wind project will be located approximately 31 miles east of Montauk, Long Island, and will power over half a million homes while creating green union jobs for New Yorkers.

Along with our partners from the Long Island Progressive Coalition, NYLCV, and the LI Federation of Labor, we submitted over 50 comments from union and community members in support of the project and good union jobs.

Day of Dialogue at Hofstra University & The New School

I had the privilege of representing CJNY at Hofstra's Day of Dialogues session on "Why We Shouldn't Give Up On Climate Change: Perspectives from Across Disciplines?"

There were over 60 students who were eager and asked thoughtful questions on how they can get involved in Climate Jobs NY and offshore wind development. I think we will see some engineers and offshore wind job seekers in the very near future!

NYLCV Candidate Education Forum

CJNY participated in a candidate education forum with the NYLCV. We heard from the three candidates running for Huntington Town Supervisor on their visions for local policies and initiatives to address the climate crisis. Chief on everyone's minds was the need to create a resilient infrastructure and I'm happy to report the resounding support for offshore wind and union jobs for Long Islanders. Here is a link to the session.

Finally, please get out to vote tomorrow. We can only create an equitable clean energy economy with good union jobs if we all participate in the democratic process!
