People who have been fully vaccinated are now free to resume life normally without wearing protective masks in most uncrowded settings, including worship services. But those who have not been vaccinated should continue to wear them. Yet, this announcement from the CDC has made things easier and harder at the same time. Our new freedom is spurring mixed reactions and new things to consider.
As we approach Memorial Day, May 31, we know that freedom for any nation is maintained at the cost of countless lives given by service men and women in armed conflict. There is a price and a sacrifice that we honor with grateful hearts.
Other kinds of freedom also have a cost. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians (5:1), “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Freedom from sin, gained through Christ Jesus, requires a commitment to stand firm in the face of temptation.
And to the church in Corinth, Paul admonishes, “But take care that this freedom of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.” It is sometimes important to curb one’s expression of freedom--even in not wearing masks--to show respect for others. We do this out of love for Christ, in order to preserve the unity of the body.
In that spirit, let us also freely sacrifice for others in order to hasten the day of full freedom from COVID. Let us give generously of our means to support the efforts of the UM Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which is aiding health providers and partners in an ongoing, global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conference makes financial decisions, highlights ministries |
The 2021 session of the Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conference, May 20-22, meeting via Zoom for a second time, showed newfound skill in virtual conferencing, deftly mixing live with pre-recorded content, including preaching, teaching, legislating, reports and recognitions. There were questions but little debate over eight resolutions in total, most of them financial.
The conference passed a 2022 Connectional Ministries Fund spending budget of $3.3 million. It is the same amount as in 2020; but significant budget increases are provided for Latino ministries, congregational development and urban ministries. Also announced is a 2021"Connectional Ministries Fund Holiday," giving churches that pay 11 months of their CMF apportionment a 12th month off. And there was a request for a ruling of law from the bishop and the UMC’s Judicial Council on whether payment of general church apportionments is now mandatory or voluntary until the next General Conference in 2022 approves a new budget.

Giving to Annual Conference offerings still needed |
Each year conference members and churches give to special offerings to help fund Eastern PA Annual Conference higher education scholarships, Board of Ordained Ministry scholarships for clergy education, Camp and Retreat Ministry Centers, and Youth Ministries. Because our Annual Conference met online and not in-person in 2020 and 2021, those offerings relied on mail-in and online donations. Thus, giving to them has declined significantly.
But the need for this support is as great as ever. So, we are inviting everyone to continue giving to support these worthy causes through our website’s Giving Page throughout the year. We will promote and accept gifts online (and by mail) to support our college students, clergy, campers and youth in the hope that you will give generously and encourage others to do so, too. Join weekly conference prayer meetings in June

Join the dozen or more prayer warriors who show up each Tuesday at noon for a half-hour of personal sharing and compelling intercessory prayer. It’s a supportive community of believers in the power of prayer. Some sessions have featured meditative music, wisdom readings and poetry to stimulate creative reflection.

Conference seeks new Coordinator of Youth, Young Adult Ministries |
The Eastern PA Conference is seeking to hire a new Coordinator of Youth & Young Adult Ministries by July 1 to succeed the Rev. David Piltz, who has been appointed as pastor of Warminster: St. Andrews UMC. The coordinator will work with youth and young adults at all levels in the conference, developing ministries, advocacy and leadership, and will serve as campus minister for the Wesley Student Foundation of Philadelphia, located at Drexel University. Peace with Justice Sunday, May 30 |
United Methodists gave $288,487 to the Peace with Justice Sunday offering in 2020. This Special Sunday with offering is a faithful expression of the biblical value of shalom that calls the church to strengthen its capacity to advocate publicly in communities and nations throughout the world. The offering is administered by the General Board of Church and Society and benefits peace with justice ministries in annual conferences like ours and around the world.

Zoe Empowers on Virtual Mission Trip, June 22-24 |
The Eastern PA Conference is partnering with ZOE Empowers, an organization which in 2021 introduced Virtual Mission Trips in order to introduce folks to its incredible, international program of serving children in poverty. ZOE’s entire approach is based on “Empowerment, not Hand-outs,” and it has demonstrated success among more than 100,000 children of the world, so far.
International mission trips are transformational for many local churches and their mission-minded members. Severe COVID-related restrictions on travel have prevented such trips from happening for the past year. But ZOE Empowers have found a solution in Virtual Mission trips. A new era for health care in Tunda, East Congo |
Methodism was planted and took root 100-years ago among the Otetela-speaking people of Tunda in Eastern Congo. This year, United Methodists there completed construction of a new hospital. Even today, there is no other hospital within a 62-mile radius. Without this facility, 100,000 people would lose access to health services.

The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation invites students preparing for chaplaincy in any branch of the U.S. military to apply for the Samuel Grover Powell Scholarship. Gifted presenters share their notes on each week’s chosen text and then lead the forum in conversation. We explore each text’s historical circumstances and present-day perspectives, plus ideas for application and initial thoughts for sermon movements, etc.

The Bible With and Without Jesus: Readers flocking to a new author-led CDT book study in June
|
The Eastern PA Conference Congregational Development Team (CDT) Book Club will sponsor a new weekly book study on Zoom—and its first study led by a woman author—in June when it welcomes Amy-Jill Levine, University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt.
She will offer an introduction and then focus on four main topics:
- June 9: The virginal conception and the pregnant young woman. (Isaiah 7:14)
- June 16: The “suffering servant”—Jesus and many others. (Isaiah 53)
- June 23: Adam and Eve—original sin and original opportunity.
- June 30: The “cry of dereliction” (Psalm 22) spoken by Jesus and by Esther
Over 90 people have registered thus far. So the offer of free books for the first 25 registrants has ended. But there is still plenty good room for more registrants to gain wisdom from the mind of this highly respected biblical scholar.
Levine’s previous books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus and Short Stories by Jesus. She also co-authored four children’s books and other works: The Gospel of Luke (with Ben Witherington III); and The Jewish Annotated New Testament (co-edited with Marc Zvi Brettler). In 2020 she published Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven.
She is the first Jew to teach New Testament at Rome’s Pontifical Biblical Institute. In 2021 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. “AJ” describes herself as an unorthodox member of an Orthodox synagogue and a Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches New Testament in a Christian divinity school in the Buckle of the Bible Belt.

Parsonage Practices: Selling or Renting – Thursday, June 17 at 6:30 PM
When a church-owned parsonage is not occupied by a full-time pastor anymore, what are the possibilities for alternate use or supplemental income production? What are the Disciplinary restrictions on such use, as well as tax implications? What benefits may be anticipated? What headaches might be incurred when we do things wrong?

August Book Club to feature Woolverton's new book

The Congregational Development Team’s next CDT Book Club selection will be the Rev. David Woolverton's newest book, Mission Rift: Leading through Church Conflict. Woolverton, who frequently teaches courses on overcoming church conflict in Eastern PA, will lead the four-week study on Wednesdays, August 11 to Sept. 1, at 11 AM. Once again, the first 25 registrants will receive the book’s Kindle version for free. Save the dates. Registration will open in June.

New Urban Ministry grant applications due May 31 |
The Eastern PA Conference Urban Commission will award a new round of grants this spring to assist in funding Urban Alliances or Urban Church Initiatives. Churches located in listed urban centers are encouraged to apply. That list includes several newly designated urban areas.
Urban Alliances comprise two or more congregations working together in collaborative ministry, preferably along with community and civic partners. The Urban Ministries Coordinator will assist in the formation of Alliances and the administration of funding. Urban Alliances, because they involve multiple partners, may apply for funding up to $6,000.
Urban Church Initiative grants support new or expanding ministries within individual urban congregations. Local Churches Initiatives may apply for funding up to $2,500. The Commission tries to offer grants twice a year. Application deadlines are May 31 and Nov. 15. Learn more...

UM podcaster receives fellowship |
United Methodist podcaster Michelle L. Eunice has been selected by United Methodist Communications for the 2021 Stoody-West Fellowship. The $6,000 education award assists post-graduate study at an accredited U.S. college or university for one United Methodist student who intends to pursue a career in religious journalism. Eunice started the "Christ Over Culture" podcast in 2016 to encourage millennials to follow God’s plan for their lives over the expectations and pressures of society. Read press release

Prayer nets inspiring church interest |
KILGORE, Texas — A fresh way to generate prayers and introduce people to the church is growing in Texas. At St. Luke's United Methodist Church, "prayer nets" placed at the front and back of the church encourage people to put prayer requests in a box and tie a ribbon on the net. Church members pray for each card received. Non-church members are making some of the requests, and it's hoped that they are encouraged to check out the rest of the church experience. Read story

Pastors and worship leaders convened in a webinar April 27 to share ideas and plans for creative, inspirational worship for the season of Pentecost (not “after Pentecost”), using the Revised Common Lectionary Year B. They explored concepts of celebrating Pentecost not as a day but as a season of six Sundays, including Trinity Sunday.
Listen and learn from three engaging seminar leaders—three Elders and one Deacon who are scholars and activists–as they help participants explore biblical studies, homiletics, worship, and incarnational social action for redemptive justice.

All of Us: Campaign seeks citizenship for immigrants
|
The UMC’s Board of Church and Society and National Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) Join invite all to join in a Week of Action June 7-14 using a legislative advocacy campaign to forge “pathways to permanent citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants.” With undocumented communities at the center of this national advocacy initiative, teams will lobby legislators in as many states as possible. They will also have media commentaries written by local JFON leaders, clients and faith leaders and try to host virtual prayer vigils using social media. Learn more...

Cabinet offers churches new reopening recommendations |
The Eastern PA Conference places the health and welfare of our members and the surrounding community as the first priority in making decisions around occupancy of buildings and grounds. Congregations must be committed to following state and city guidelines and have reopening plans approved by their church councils. Please continue to monitor the PA.gov, Phila/gov and CDC websites for up-to-date information.
The Cabinet offers churches updated recommendations, based on guidance provided May 13 by the CDC and PA’s Gov. Wolf:
• Wear masks inside when unvaccinated people or larger crowds are present.
• Keep safe physical distances (3-6 feet apart, depending on state and local guidelines).
• Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds and use hand sanitizer.
• Do not enter public spaces or attend gatherings when experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Conference office to fully reopen June 1 with new guidelines |
The Eastern PA Conference Office will fully reopen June 1!
“We are excited to welcome conference members and guests back to our Valley Forge location for business and scheduled meetings,” announced Jo Fielding, Director of Administrative Services, May 13. “We encourage everyone to become vaccinated and observe safety guidelines.”
Staff began returning to the Conference office months ago for several days a week, while still also working from home. Most will begin working onsite three days a week in June, while the office moves to its customary, four-day, summer workweek from June 1 to August 31. The official summer office hours will be Mondays to Thursdays, 7:30 AM to 5 PM.
Due to new CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) guidelines, staff and visitors no longer need to wear masks in the office if they are fully vaccinated from the coronavirus. Learn more…

The Great North District's 2021 Clergy Family Picnic will again happen at Knoebel's, “America's Largest Free-Admission Amusement Park,” on Saturday, July 10, 11:30 AM. Members will enjoy fun, food and fellowship together. REGISTER online by June 21.

New puzzle helps clergy families navigate pastoral transitions |
Jigsaw Journey is a puzzle with a discussion guide, online videos, and other tools, provided by Artos Retreats (“Bread for the Soul”), to help clergy families navigate the emotional journey of pastoral transitions. It’s a good conversation-starter to help families reveal and share thoughts and feelings about the experience.
“The game opened a doorway for my family to talk about some challenging issues related to our upcoming transition,” said one clergy spouse with two teenage boys. “We may have never talked unless we were working on the puzzle.”

Racial Ethnic Local Church grants available this fall |
Grants up to $10,000 will be available this fall from Discipleship Ministries to strengthen leadership training, small groups, worship, stewardship and spiritual formation in racial-ethnic local United Methodist churches. The application deadline for Racial Ethnic Local Church Concerns (RELCC) grants is Sept. 1.
RELCC grants are available each year, with priority given to new programs. Funds are not provided for personnel, equipment or ongoing building costs.
