April marks the peak of the hot season in Thailand. Amidst the summer warmth, it made me ponder on a spontaneous question, does it ever snow in the country?
A quick search led me to a fascinating tale from January 7, 1955, when Chiang Rai experienced an extraordinary weather event — its only recorded snowfall to date. This curiosity sparked a nostalgic journey through my memories of this northern territory.
In the chilly morning air of Chiang Rai, with temperatures dipping to about 10 °C, I was met with a heartwarming act. The team at the resort where I stayed offered me a down jacket to keep me warm, showcasing true hospitality in action.

I've discovered that the owners of the resort have initiated a project to empower young women from the neighbouring hill tribes — by providing them with access to education and livelihood. These remarkable individuals reside just steps away from the resort in a nearby house, where they diligently fulfil various responsibilities. From tending to the expansive vegetable gardens which supply fresh produce for the Visama Chef, to managing the chicken farm ensuring guests enjoy farm-fresh eggs for breakfast, their contributions are invaluable. Moreover, they actively engage with the local school community. I highly recommend meeting these inspiring individuals to gain insight into their way of life and aspirations. |
