Don Jenkins -Lafayette’s Ultimate Volunteer
It is hard to meet anyone in Lafayette who does not know Don Jenkins. Unexpectedly, Don passed away on August 4th. The influence Don has had on our community cannot be summed up by this short list, but it does reveal the way he and his bride Linda have lived their lives.
- Chamber President in 1995
- Business Person of the Year in 1996
- Citizen of the Year in 2018
- Mt. Diablo Estate Planners Council and the Planned Giving Council of Northern California
- Rotary President and National Advisor to the Rotary Foundation
-
Founding Trustee for LOPC
-
Founding Board Member of the Lafayette Community Foundation
- Has traveled to several countries with his wife Linda to deliver artificial LN-4 hands.
-
Founding board member of Lamorinda Village
-
Currently working with the Cancer Support Community to build a new facility in Lafayette, Senior Commissioner, and a member of GPAC.
The Sunrise Rotary Club of Lamorinda calls him “The International Man of Mystery.” We think of Don as Lafayette’s ultimate volunteer. He organized and co-chaired the Senior Symposium for five years. He has taken leadership roles in every organization or project he has participated in.
Our community will always remember Don as someone who always modeled “Service above self” in everything he did.
A QUIET THOUGHT
At last Friday’s Sunrise Rotary Club of Lamorinda President Dan Herbert started the meeting by asking for words occurring to the members upon thinking of Don. From around the meeting room they came:
“Dedicated -- generous -- gentleman -- bold -- love -- giving -- hardworking -- dynamic -- vital -- Rotarian -- dependable -- fine -- swimmer -- sailor -- good person -- commitment -- Dad -- irreverent -- friendly -- super salesman -- devoted husband -- mid-stride (only Buddy Burke could come up with that) -- civic leader -- pillar of community -- friend -- “
There is no additional information about plans to celebrate Don’s life at this time.

Lear at Cal Shakes Free Community Nights
Please join Cal Shakes on September 7 or September 8 at 7:30pm for a free Community Night performance of Cal Shakes production of Lear in a brand-new modern verse translation.
Community Nights are an opportunity to share our work with members of our community who are making the Bay Area a more equitable, more joyful, and more inspiring place to live and work.
Tickets are free! So, grab your friends and colleagues and join us for a night of theater under the stars. You can reserve up to 4 complimentary tickets by using the promo code Community22 at calshakes.org.
Returning to Cal Shakes after his acclaimed production of black odyssey, Marcus Gardley brings his world premiere of Lear, a deconstruction of the classic story of power, betrayal, and madness to the Bruns Memorial Amphitheater.
Set in San Francisco’s Fillmore District from the eminent domain crisis through to the subsequent displacement of the 1960s, and infused with a jazz score, Gardley’s deeply personal Lear reckons with uncomfortable legacies, with the consequences of our actions, and with the vulnerability and ultimate resilience of the human heart to find its way back again.

Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation Distinguished Speaker Series presents Anthony Marra: Mercury Pictures Presents
Tuesday, August 9, 2022
7:00 PM | Don Tatzin Community Hall
"A genuinely moving and life-affirming novel that’s a true joy to read.”—Celeste Ng, author of Little Fires Everywhere
Award-winning author Anthony Marra will be joined in conversation with innovative writer and director Michael Ray. Written with intelligence, wit, and an exhilarating sense of possibility, Mercury Pictures Presents spans many moods and tones, from heartbreaking to the ecstatic. It is a love letter to life’s bit players, a panorama of an era that casts a long shadow over our own, and a tour de force by a novelist whose work The Washington Post calls “a flash in the heavens that makes you look up and believe in miracles.”
On the eve of America’s entry into World War II, Italian émigré Maria Lagana is an associate producer at Mercury Pictures, trying to keep her personal and professional lives from falling apart. Her mother won’t speak to her. Her boss, a man of many toupees, has been summoned to Washington by congressional investigators. Her boyfriend, a virtuoso Chinese American actor, can’t escape the studio’s narrow typecasting. And the studio itself, Maria’s only home in exile, teeters on the verge of bankruptcy. While the world descends into war, Maria rises through a maze of conflicting politics, divided loyalties, and jockeying ambitions in a timeless story of love, deceit, and sacrifice.
Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation Distinguished Speaker Series presents
Emi Nietfeld: Acceptance
Wednesday, August 10, 2022
7:00 PM | Don Tatzin Community Hall
Fans of the memoirs Educated and The Glass Castle will love ACCEPTANCE!
Nietfeld's honest, harrowing and darkly humorous memoir is both a chronicle and indictment of achieving today's American Dream. Her compelling life story involves family dysfunction, mental health struggles, foster care and homelessness, the fiercely competitive college admissions process, and ultimately the resilience to live life on one's own terms.
As a homeless teenager writing college app essays from her rusty Toyota Corolla, Nietfeld set out to prove she was an "overcomer" worthy of acceptance to the Ivy League. Though she would go on to graduate from Harvard and become a software engineer, success didn't guarantee safety as she later revealed in a viral NY Times op-ed from April 2021 that pulled back the curtain on her experience at Google.
Emi Nietfield will be conversation with Mary Volmer, the author of two novels, a teacher at St. Mary's College, and the Founder of Alta Mesa Center for the Arts in Orinda, CA.
Program presented by Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation with Orinda Books.
