From Mr. Kigeya

Dear Regent Scholars,

This month's Regent Reporter will focus on how we end 1st semester with success.

Next week, we will have a revised schedule referred to as Bridge Week.  Bridge Week is our intentional focus  towards ensuring ALL Regent Scholars are able to achieve academic success.  It is also an opportunity for others to reflect and/or prepare for the work that is to come during 2nd semester.

You can find the Bridge Week communication and schedule here.

Scholars, in order to end the semester well, this week you should be taking the opportunity to increase your score(s)/grade(s)!  Pay careful attention to the deadlines and caps for REDO/RETAKE assignments and/or assessments.  Right now… this week… is the time to focus and secure the BEST grade you can.  Do not dither!

See your teachers for help.  They want to help.  Good luck.

Onwards

Mr. Kigeya

West High School Scholarships

West offers a number of scholarships to graduating students. The West HS scholarship application will be shared with seniors via email on January 11th, 2023 and the deadline to apply will be February 3rd, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. The application will also be posted on the West counseling website on January 11th.

What is it? Each year, many local organizations and individuals generously provide approximately 45 scholarships for West Seniors.  Each scholarship donor determines the criteria for their scholarship. The criteria vary widely, but may include one or more of the following:  academic achievement, leadership, school/community service, athletic achievement, financial need, special interests/talents, personal character, or intended area of study.

Who can Apply?  ALL SENIORS who have attended high school in the Madison Metropolitan School District for a minimum of three (3) full semesters. The 8th, or final, semester must be at West. West students at Early College STEM Academy are eligible to apply.  In addition, seniors must complete and submit the West High Scholarship application to be considered for these scholarships.

Seniors - Reminder to order your cap/gown!

Hey Seniors! This is a reminder to order your graduation apparel - late fees will start being charged March 1st! Online orders are preferred and can be made at https://www.mwscholastic.com/2023-west-store. If a paper order form/cash payment is preferred, you can stop by the Ash Office to get a form.  Orders will be available for pick-up late in late April/early May. Payments must be made directly to Midwest Scholastic, West High School will NOT accept payments. ALL CAP/GOWN ORDER QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED DIRECTLY TO MIDWEST SCHOLASTIC at [email protected].

Construction Update

Structural work continues on the pool and gym addition

Construction workers made significant progress on the new pool and gym addition over winter break. The south and east concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls in the gym space are complete, and work is ongoing on the west CMU walls. Because of the cold weather, crews built plastic barriers around the masonry scaffolds to hold in the heat as the walls are being installed. In the pool area, structural steel joists are being installed, which will support the steel decking and roof, as well as provide additional rigidity to the overall building structure. These joists undergo an in-depth painting process, which starts in the fabrication shop and finishes in the building, so they are protected in a pool environment.

Third-floor renovations are ongoing

The current phase of interior renovations is focused on the third-floor south wing, which includes science and biology classrooms, and offices. Environmental work is complete, and demolition in these spaces is nearly finished. Crews will soon start working on the infrastructure for the walls and above the ceilings for the new biology rooms in this space.
