HVIP Reopens
The HVIP Program will re-open at 10 a.m, March 30, 2022. Additionally, the following set-aside funds will also become available at the same time.
  • $65.5 million for public transit buses
  • $46 million for Class 8 tractors performing drayage operations
  • $122 million for the Public School Bus Set-Aside for Small and Medium Air Districts
  • School bus requests ineligible for the set-aside will be funded out of standard HVIP

Job Opening: Executive Director for the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation
The US Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has listed the position of Executive Director for the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation that will oversee the deployment of $7.5 billion to build out a national electric vehicle (EV) charging network. The listing is open until 3/21/22 and has a salary range of $178K - $204K.

CARB EVSE Standards
CARB has posted the slides and recording of the workshop where the requirements for EVSE service providers were presented. Some of these requirements include: 
  • Chargers must be accessible to drivers regardless of membership in an Electric Vehicle Service Provider’s (EVSP) network.  
  • EVSPs must operate credit card readers and mobile payment options on new DCFC by 1/1/22, and new L2 by 1/1/23. 
  • EVSPs must post all fees associated with a charging session.    
  • EVSPs must report new, current, and decommissioned EVSE locations.

Lightning eMotors has expanded their manufacturing facility to more than 226,000 square feet, doubling its production capacity. Lightning eMotors expects to deliver 1,500 zero emission complete vehicles and powertrain systems annually by the end of 2022 and up to 20,000 vehicles and powertrain systems by 2025

Ford Mach E Police Cruiser
Police fleets do not have good options for EV Police cruisers, with upfits (push bumpers, prisoner cages, etc.) costing $8K - $15K for conventional vehicles, but $30K for a Tesla Model Y. Ford released Mach E cruiser upfit guidelines in 2021, but is now considering producing the Mach E as a certified police cruiser.

US Foods Converting to Renewable Diesel
US Foods has announced that they will convert 100% of fleet diesel use to renewable diesel by Q3 2022, is currently completing conversion to 100% renewable diesel at their Livermore distribution center, and will use 100% renewable diesel at their newest distribution center in Sacramento, opening later this year.

CEC Awards $2.5M for Advancing Low Carbon Hydrogen Production
The CEC has awarded $2.5M under GFO-21-502 to two different companies to advance hydrogen production:
  • Technology & Investment Solutions LLC for Catalytic Dry Reforming of Biogas using an Electrically Heated/Waste Heat Recuperating Catalytic Reformer System for Ultrapure Hydrogen Production
  • STARS Technology Corporation for The STARS Gen-2 Low-Carbon Hydrogen and Methanol Productions

Aemetis has purchased a 125 acre former military ammunition facility in the Central Valley town of Riverbank (near Modesto) where they will make renewable aviation fuel and renewable diesel from orchard & vineyard trimmings combined with fats/oils/grease (FOG).

New research has thrown a shadow over the safety of solid state batteries because of fire hazards when the batteries are damaged or when internal pressures build up.

Cobalt Price Volatility
Cobalt accounts for about a quarter of the cost of the batteries in EVs. The price for cobalt has been volatile, running from $25/pound to $40/pound. Due to the high cost and price volatility, battery manufacturers are looking for alternatives. Much of the world’s supply of cobalt comes from the Congo, where over 40,000 children as young as six are forced to work extracting cobalt under harsh conditions.
