Hymn of the Day for Easter 3 - April 14, 2024

“With High Delight”  ELW 368

In today’s Gospel from Luke 24: 36-48, we have the parallel story to last week’s “Doubting Thomas” story (John 20), but Luke tells it without the character of Thomas. Here, when Jesus appears to the disciples they are startled and terrified, thinking him a ghost! Jesus invites them all to touch him and see and therefore believe. Finally as a proof that he is fully alive again, Jesus asks them for a bit of food. If he can eat, he is alive! Perhaps the point of both stories here was a real physical proof that Jesus, after having been killed on that cross, had been brought back to life so that all could believe in a resurrection like his for themselves according to God’s promise.

Our hymn of the day gives us words and a common voice with which to proclaim together that we do indeed believe that he died and “burst forth into life again!  “With High Delight Let Us Unite” gives voice to our belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection,

“True God, he first from death has burst forth into life, all subduing.

His enemy now vanquished see: his death has been death’s undoing.”

This text by Georg Vetter from the mid/late 1500s was originally written in Czech, but then translated into English by a Minnesotan, Martin Franzmann. The tune MIT FREUDEN ZART is a Bohemian Brethren tune dating back to the Genevan Psalter of 1551.

Peace!

“Sooley" follows the story of Samuel Solleymon, a teenager from South Sudan who is separated from his family because of an ongoing civil war while pursuing his dreams of becoming an NBA player.
