Greetings!
Today marks exactly one year since the new Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department, or LA Civil Rights, was announced by Mayor Eric Garcetti.
As I look back, it's amazing to think of all we have accomplished in 365 days.
Not only did we build a brand new department, we held hundreds of community meetings, hosted dozens of community events, brought vaccines to thousands of people in our city, and launched the city's very first anti-hate campaign.
This is the first time the City of Los Angeles has ever established a department to tackle the discrimination that harms our city and its people. It marks a real turning point in our history - where we can acknowledge the inequity around us, be intentional about creating solutions, and bend the arc a little closer toward justice.
I am so thankful to the staff, volunteers, and 32 Commissioners who leaned in to make LA Civil Rights a reality. We are especially grateful to the Mayor and City Council for creating this department and helping it grow. This week, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed the 2021-22 city budget, which includes six new positions for LA Civil Rights. With this support from our city leaders, we will be able to grow our department, serve more members of our community, and stand up more programs for equity & justice.
The future is bright at LA Civil Rights - we can't wait to do even more in Year Two.
Keep the faith and keep the fight,
- Capri Maddox
Executive Director,
Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department

June is Pride Month, when we recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ trailblazers of Los Angeles who are building a more inclusive and affirming city. It was right here in Los Angeles that organizers launched the world’s first gay pride parade in 1970, and where, in 2016, LA became the first major American city to establish a Transgender Advisory Council. We will be sharing these stories and more on our #PointsofPride social media campaign all month long - follow along on our Twitter page.
We are proud to continue the work with the Transgender Advisory Council, which is a part of the LA Civil Rights family. The Transgender Advisory Council meets regularly to advocate for the transgender community and advance policies that support transgender individuals. Learn more about the Transgender Advisory Council here.

Mayor Garcetti Signs the Justice Budget
|
This week, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed the city budget for Fiscal Year 2021-'22. This budget makes historic investments in ending homelessness, supporting young people, and ending poverty. The budget also includes funding to help the LA Civil Rights department thrive. We are so grateful to the Mayor and the City Council for supporting our department and for passing this justice budget.

Executive Director Capri Maddox was a guest on LA This Week's "LA Currents" to discuss our department's work in addressing discrimination, inequities and respond to a rising tide of hate. We have a lot of programs underway, with much more work ahead of us - and we are grateful for the chance to share some of that work with our friends at LA This Week.
