Record Breaking Season for Fall Migration Bird Banding
Bird Banding is conducted each fall to monitor songbird populations during their migration. Kiawah Island provides an important stop-over habitat that migrating birds rely on to rest and refuel before continuing their journey.

Sonya Stevens and Jason Tighe of ABC News 4 recently spent a day shadowing the Town's Assistant Wildlife Biologist, Aaron Given, as he provided them with a glimpse of the fall-migration bird banding process.

During their time together, Mr. Given revealed that this fall was a record-breaking season for Kiawah, with a grand total of 5,700 birds banded.

Charleston County Comprehensive Plan Five Year Review
In addition to the Town’s Comprehensive Plan Update, Charleston County is going through their five-year review of the County’s Comprehensive Plan. The Town continues to encourage residents to engage in the County’s planning processes.

While the Town’s Comprehensive Plan update is critically important to the Kiawah community, so is Charleston County’s Plan. The Plan will provide guidance to the County’s decision-makers as they evaluate future proposals and policy changes, particularly on how the County will be developed in the next five to ten years.

The County is asking the community to please complete Charleston County’s Comprehensive Plan Five-Year Review Survey. The Town highly encourages residents and property owners to complete the survey. Town staff will also be engaged with county staff on priorities of the two comprehensive plans through each of these processes.

All survey submissions are due by January 3, 2023.
Captain Sam’s Spit Update
On August 10, the Town received an appeal filed by the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP) challenging the Town’s Planning Commission’s decision to extend the approval of Kiawah Development Partners’ preliminary subdivision plat for Capitan Sam’s Spit for one year.

On December 1, both the Town of Kiawah Island’s Planning Commission and Kiawah Resort Associates separately submitted legal memos opposing SCELP’s appeal and requesting that the appeal to be dismissed in court. The Town’s full memo is available online here.

Please go to the Development Resources webpage for additional information and updates related to this matter. If you have additional questions pertaining to Captain Sam’s Spit, please contact the Town at contact@kiawahisland.org.

Wine Bottle Cork Recycling
Keep Charleston Beautiful is encouraging the Lowcountry to drop off their collected wine bottle corks to be sent off to ReCORK

ReCORK is a company that accepts natural cork for recycling. The corks are then turned into things like shoe soles, flooring, and surfboards.

Melissa Newhall, a Town resident, has volunteered to collect and transport all recycled wine bottle corks on the Island.

Since April, residents of Kiawah have given a total of 122 corks!

Corks must be dropped off at 89 Friendfield Hall
*Please place in the blue bin next to the garbage cans.

For further information, please contact Melissa Newhall at 414-350-8478.
