DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

This is an exciting time for our project as we move into the edit phase! Post production is an intense time of creativity when we take what we’ve shot and build a story with music, narration and sound design culminating in the final movie. The first step is to edit a rough cut - our diamond in the rough. Just what is a rough cut, and why is it so important?

A rough cut is an unpolished version of the film to be shared with potential broadcasters and distributors. With it, they can determine whether they want to buy rights and whether they want to hold a stake in the final product. But just what is a rough cut? This cut typically is not the final length of the film. It may include longer and more scenes than the final (our "polished diamond.") Additionally, the music in the rough cut may not be fully composed, and there will be a “scratch track” of the narration, meaning it is not the final recording done by the celebrity narrator. Sequences may be in a different order and slates may be used to denote animation or missing material.

A rough cut is critical so we can begin to:

  • fine-tune our script
  • finalize our structure
  • and create our sound design

It’s also important for generating interest and funding for the final phase of post production. It will be used to show distributors, attract investors and apply for finishing funds so that we can complete the film. Our goal is to raise $35,000, and we need your help to raise these funds. We are looking for donors of any amount and investors who want to profit-share beginning at the level of $2,000 to help us polish our diamond.  Also, it will help if you share our story on social media or email with a personal note. And if you have connections to organizations or corporations that might be interested in sponsoring the film when it airs on PBS please let us know contacts. Finally, consider making a donation by:
