Hunterdon Commissioners Call For Counties To Rally To Stop School Aid Cuts   Hunterdon Schools Lose $8.4 Million In Aid From State Over Four Years

Reiterating a previous call to ‘Stop The School Aid Madness,’ the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners approved a Resolution declaring the Board’s commitment to restoring much needed state aid to county school districts where aid has been cut and urges thirteen other Boards of County Commissioners across the state to fight the school aid cuts in the state’s proposed FY 21-22 budget.   “We are calling on fellow Boards of Commissioners in thirteen other counties where over 180 school districts are seeing aid cuts, to send resolutions to the legislators representing their counties suggesting budget language that school districts receive at least no less school aid than provided in the previous year.   Hunterdon school aid is being cut by $2.6 million, the fourth consecutive year of aid cuts, while school aid is proposed to increase by $578 million. Hunterdon Board Prepares Oversight and Fiscal Controls For American Rescue Cash

Citing the County’s track record of excellence in implementing financial controls, Hunterdon County’s Board of Commissioners took action to prepare for the receipt of more than $24 million in funds from the new American Rescue Plan, by authorizing the Board’s Budget Committee to develop the initial plan for the administration of the funds.   County Commissioners Matt Holt and Shaun C. Van Doren serve on the Board’s Budget Committee.   Holt, a longtime member of the Budget Committee, stated, “The U.S. Treasury Department will prepare rules regarding the use and accounting for the funds. The one thing that new law states the funds cannot be used for, unfortunately, is to reduce taxes. Which is an acknowledgement of who now runs Washington.   It is reported that the County is in line for over $24 million which can be used, according to various reports, to pay COVID-related expenses; cover lost revenues due to the pandemic; maintain critical services; provide additional assistance to residents and small businesses; and invest in water, sewer and broadband infrastructure, among other uses.” Click here to read more

Commissioners Honor Women In History   Special Tribute To Hunterdon Historic Women

Recognizing March as Women’s History Month, the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners approved a Proclamation in honor of women in history, particularly in Hunterdon County, and called upon all residents to honor and remember the important women in their lives at the March 16th Board meeting.   Board Director Susan J. Soloway said, “Hunterdon County is proud to honor women the world over, but here in Hunterdon County we are home to some very special and notable women of our own, as recorded in a book produced by the County’s Cultural and Heritage Commission, entitled Notable Women Throughout the History of Hunterdon County.”   During remarks at the Board meeting, Ms. Soloway highlighted two of the 76 women portrayed in the publication: Rose Z. Hunterdon Board Director Calls For Biden Administration To Change Course And Oppose Eminent Domain Abuse Soloway, in a letter to Governor Phil Murphy, U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, and Congressman Tom Malinowski, wrote, “The Third Circuit ruling prevents the abuse of eminent domain, which Hunterdon County’s Board has long opposed, and the doctrine of sovereign immunity, which protects states’ rights, and should not be overturned.
