March 19, 2021 | JNCL Announcement
JNCL-NCLIS is appalled by the violent murders that took place in Atlanta, GA on March 16. Today we express our sincerest condolences and offer our support to the families of those who lost their lives and to our members, advocates, and allies experiencing the pain of these traumatic events. We stand in solidarity with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) people across our country against all racist rhetoric and acts.
As we face the deeply troubling continuance of hate crimes, we reaffirm our commitment to being catalysts for change. We will continue to work together to raise awareness of the critical need for equitable and broad opportunities for multilingual and multicultural learning to fulfill our vision of a world where language builds mutual understanding and acceptance of cultural and linguistic diversity. JNCL-NCLIS aims to support policy that focuses on a national outlook that addresses amplifying language and culture as integral ways to respect our diverse communities.

Are you planning to attend this year’s virtual Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) Conference on March 22–24? If so, you won’t want to miss these two sessions from the Migration Policy Institute’s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy. Please join us to learn more about our research and findings on the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) program and our recommendations for more equitably serving immigrant parents of young and school-age children in adult education programs.
Displacing Immigrant Learners: Assessing the Impact of Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education
Tuesday, March 23, 3:00-4:15 PM EDT
Session 7
By linking integrated education and training with English and civics instruction, IELCE has displaced many immigrant learners who were previously served under the English Literacy and Civics (EL/Civics) program. Despite its limitations, IELCE has effectively served some immigrant learners, especially those with higher levels of education and English proficiency. Join us to discuss IELCE’s impacts and recommendations to address the equity concerns its implementation has created.
Speakers:
Jacob Hofstetter, Associate Policy Analyst, National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, MPI
Alexis Cherewka, Consultant, National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, MPI
