OCCDL’s Statement Denouncing
Anti-Asian Racism
In June 2020, OCCDL issued a Statement Denouncing Anti-Asian Racism During Coronavirus Outbreak. Especially after an Atlanta gunman murdered eight victims and injured a ninth (seven women and six Asian) this past week, perhaps the latest against elders and persons of all ages, OCCDL and its members again join other law firms and organizations in denouncing incidents of xenophobia, racism, and violent attacks against persons and groups of Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage.

We denounce any of these actions against any diverse group and are saddened to see continuing attacks against those of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. In the last year alone, the Stop AAPI Hate Reporting Center has recorded nearly 3,800 reported incidents of anti-Asian racism.

Women have been particularly impacted: 68% of these reported incidents were against women (2.3 times that against men). The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism found hate crimes against Asians rose by nearly 150% in America’s 16 largest cities in 2020. NYPD reported a 1,900% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes last year. Canadian and other countries’ agencies and non-profits have identified similar trends in reported incidents. Perhaps sadder still, as with so many other types of abuse and aggression, even more incidents have likely occurred but not been reported or categorized due to fear, shame, language or access issues, and other barriers.

We stand with Asians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and thankfully many allies in fighting against these behaviors which threaten the health and safety of all. We urge policymakers and other community leaders to join us in promoting racial equality and in condemning violence, divisiveness, and bias that have no place in our communities.

We are all in this together. #StopAAPIHate. #StopAsianHate.
