A Letter from the Interim Priest-in-Charge
THE POWER OF PRAYER

“Prayer is a force as real as gravity! As a physician, I have seen patients, after all other therapy had failed, lifted out of disease and melancholy by the serene effort of prayer. It is the only power in the world that seems to overcome the so-called ‘laws of nature.’ The occasions on which prayer has dramatically done this have been termed ‘miracles.’ But, a constant quieter miracle takes place hourly in the hearts of men and women who have discovered that prayer supplies them with a steady flow of sustaining power in their daily lives.”

I often wish I had penned those words, but they are from a 1941 Reader’s Digest article by one of my surgical heroes, Nobel Laureate, Doctor Alex Carrel, the father of transplant surgery. Although Doctor Carrel established techniques that have saved countless lives, his life was somewhat of a contradiction. He was raised a Catholic, became an agnostic, and later in life developed a deep spirituality and faith. There is hope for all of us!

Doctor Carrel had found something in prayer and he strongly recommended it: “If you make a habit of sincere prayer, your life will be very noticeably and profoundly altered. Prayer stamps with its indelible mark our actions and demeanor. A tranquility of bearing, a facial and bodily repose, is observed in those whose inner lives are thus enriched. Within the depths of consciousness, a flame kindles. And man sees himself. He discovers his selfishness, his silly pride, his fears, his greed, his blunders. He develops a sense of moral obligation, intellectual humility. Thus begins a journey of the soul toward the realm of grace.”

As I read Doctor Carrel’s commendation to make prayer a life habit, I am reminded of the philosophical statement by Rene’ Descartes, cogito ergo sum, “I think, therefore I am.” It seems to me that Doctor Carrel has transcended Descartes' philosophy to a higher plane, which can be rephrased as, “I pray, therefore I am.”

As Episcopalians, we are bound together by the Book of Common Prayer. As people of Saint Paul’s Church, we are bound together by our habit of communal and individual prayer for each other. In the short time I have been with you all I have found Saint Paul’s to be a praying community that realizes that prayer is not just something nice to do on Sundays, but it is absolutely necessary.

Peace,
Joe+
A Letter from the Senior Warden
Dear People of Saint Paul's Church:

We hear you! We are working hard to return to our Church. The 11:00 services are well-attended and it's wonderful to see so many familiar faces again. We have some exciting events on the horizon. Sunday, May 16, will be our "Senior Sunday," when we celebrate the many accomplishments of our graduating high school seniors. Many of them will be participating in the service, adding an extra level of joy.

To ensure that their families are able to be physically present with them that morning, we are reserving space for them and delaying slightly the general sign-up for this service. Of course, we will continue to stream the service on Facebook. Please keep these young adults and their families in your prayers as they transition into the next phase of their lives and remind them that Saint Paul's will always be their home.

Senior Sunday is not the only event planned for May 16. The first Celtic Service of 2021 will be held at 5:30 p.m. This special service for reflection and prayer has become an opportunity for Saint Paul's to be even more available to the community. We hope that you will welcome this service into your routine and continue to invite friends to join you. We have not forgotten those who prefer the 8 a.m. service and are working towards bringing it back VERY soon.

Each return to normal and new opportunity for engagement at the Church requires planning and preparation.  As you enter the Church this weekend, you will find some changes. First, you will be able to check yourself in using the list generated by the signups and confirming the number in attendance. Second, you will be able to choose your seat; the ushers will guide you to the preferred seat and we ask that you continue to stagger and space yourselves. For several weeks, you have been invited to consider assisting the many committees and teams which serve the congregation.  We welcome all hands at this time and hope that you will feel called to serve again or for the first time in support of these services.

Our Conflict Transformation Report and Liturgy with Rev. Becky Rowell and Rev. Melanie Lemberg is scheduled for May 17 and 18. A separate notice with instructions for reservations is being sent. Should you have questions about attendance, please contact the Parish Office.

Finally, to all of our mothers, thank you. We love you. We remember you. The Flower Guild has prepared a lovely expression of appreciation to be shared with those in attendance Sunday.

With Thanks,
Ashley Wright
Senior Warden
EVENTS THIS SUNDAY | May 9
Godly Play - Children through 5th grade
K-2nd grade, 9 - 9:40 a.m.
3rd-5th grade, 9:45 - 10:30 a.m.
Leaders: Kim Butler and Ivey Coleman
We take children and their relationship with God seriously and seek to provide both space to foster encounters with God and the language necessary to make meaning of those experiences. Within the Godly Play classroom, the Biblical narrative is lovingly presented to children using beautiful materials with an invitation to step into each story with awe and wonder. Children are then allowed time to respond to and reflect on their experience of the story.

The Godly Play class sends weekly emails on Saturday morning. If you have children K-5th grade and would like to receive this email, please contact Maddy Baker.

Book Study: Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times
Sundays, 10 a.m., Meet outside by the Celtic Cross

All who are interested are invited to gather by the Celtic Cross on Sundays at 10 a.m. We will end promptly by 10:45 a.m. to allow everyone time to get into church. In this book, Bishop Curry offers no abstract or philosophical analyses of love. He simply tells his personal stories of how he has experienced the love of God, which he proclaims is the only source and key to life and that love is “an equal opportunity employer.”

Copies are available in the Parish Office to anyone interested. For more information, please contact Maddy Baker.
