Since mid-2020, the Values and Life Skills (VaLI) thematic group were invited to be part of continuous series of workshops organized by Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), Plan International, World Education Inc., and Room to Read to develop the National Guideline that will be used to assess life skills and cross-cutting issues manuals. The first meeting collected stakeholders’ inputs on whether to review and redesign a new life skills framework or develop guidelines for assessing manuals for life skills and cross-cutting issues. Later, it was agreed that the focus should be on the development of a guideline for life skills and cross-cutting issues. The guideline has four parts: the rationale of developing the guideline and context, selection of the skills, pedagogical skills, and the assessment of these skills. It provides proper guidance on how the write-ups on life skills and cross-cutting issues should be developed taking into account the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) whose impact will clearly be observed to the targeted beneficiaries. It is anticipated to facilitate standardization of content produced and will allow the stakeholders to contribute knowledge in the life skills arena for Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary schools, and Teachers’ colleges.
Various special education stakeholders had their tête-à-tête discussion on January 11, 2021, to discuss matters related to building an inclusive culture for deaf students in the Tanzania education sector. Participants had an avenue of advising the Arch Bishop Mihayo University College of Tabora (AMUCTA), which focuses on Special Education in Tanzania, on the best ways of implementing various education projects in the field of deaf education along with involving the government to prioritize key issues. The Commissioner of Education, Dr. Lyabwene Mtahabwa, encouraged the college to launch various education programs aiming at Early Childhood Education that would lead to certificates and diplomas. He further challenged that the creation of the bulk of degree holders would have less impact if lower levels of education are not intervened. Earlier, Prof. Muzale, Principal of the College, highlighted different areas in which AMUCTA has capitalized – Inclusive Education being the main area. The meeting was attended by the Director of Education, Dr. Julius Nestory; Director of Special Education (MoEST), Dr. Magreth Matonya; the Archbishop of Tabora, His Grace Paul Ruzoka; Zonal School Quality Assurers, Education officers, Heads of Schools, University officials, lecturers, and support staff.
Kenya
On January 25, RELI Kenya members began a data collection exercise to establish the status of schools after re-opening during the COVID 19 pandemic. This exercise is being done via a phone survey on Kobo collect. Kobo Collect is a real-time android-based application used to collect the data which feeds into your Kobo Toolbox account. The purpose of this exercise is to assess schools and find out;
  • If all learners and teachers have reported back,
  • If the infrastructure is adequate and adheres to all COVID 19 protocols,
  • and if the schools have received any support to facilitate the adjustments.
