APP's Annual Conference

The countdown is on! Less than 50 days until the APP's 108th Annual Conference in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands -- September 25 to 28, 2022! Our agenda is coming together nicely and we're in the midst of assigning times, gathering speaker bios and presentation outlines. Stay tuned as we start rolling out announcements! This year's agenda covers all the bases: MARAD Town Hall, World Bank infrastructure projects, port activity updates and best practices, technology, climate change and weather monitoring, government initiatives, and much much more.
Featured events and speakers
Real-time coastal intelligence for port operations and safety
Dr. Scott Beatty, will discuss the value of coastal intelligence for port operations with case studies from North American ports and a vision to leverage real-time wind, wave, weather and newly introduced Berth pocket depth data to enhance port operations, transform marine safety, and build climate-resilient coastlines.
World Bank engagement with Pacific Ports
Dr. Fei Deng and Ninan Oommen Biju will provide an overview of the Pacific maritime sector highlighting challenges and opportunities (connectivity, sustainability, safety, resilience, etc.) before providing a roadmap to more resilient and green ports.
Tours of Ports of Saipan and Tinian
In addition to a guided tour of the Port of Saipan, attendees will visit the Island of Tinian for a tour of the Port of Tinian to see operations first hand.

Bobby Olvera Jr. elected as new president of APP
August 5, 2022 – The Association of Pacific Ports is pleased to welcome Bobby Olvera Jr. as our newly elected President. Representing the Port of Long Beach, California, Mr. Olvera assumes the role following the tenure of Kimberlyn King-Hinds from the Commonwealth Ports Authority, Northern Mariana Islands, hosts of the upcoming APP Annual Conference (September 25 to 28, 2022). “I look forward to working with APP members in the coming year,” he said adding that “collaboration and communication between us all are essential as we work to further the best interests of our communities and constituents.”

APP Welcomes Fiji Ports Corporation Limited as newest Port Member
August 5, 2022 – The Association of Pacific Ports is very pleased to welcome Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) as our newest Port Member. As the Port Management Company for all ports in Fiji, including the Port of Suva, Fiji's largest and busiest container and general Port; the Port of Lautoka, Fiji's largest Port for handling bulk cargo; and the Ports of Malau, Wairiki, Levuka and Rotuma. FPCL also plays a regulatory role in maintaining standards relating to Ports of Entry and other local ports.

Port Commissioner Richard Dodge retires

Port of Redwood City (Port) Commissioner, Richard Dodge, retired at the end of July, after 42 years of Port service. Dodge was originally appointed to the Board of Port Commissioners in 1980. His service is one of the longest port commissioner tenures in the United States.

Dodge’s involvement in the maritime community demonstrates his commitment to the industry. As a multi-term past president and current Regional Coordinator of the Association of Pacific Ports, he is recognized as an international maritime leader.

Marshall Islands Port Authority takes next steps toward new airport terminal

uly 31, 2022 — The Republic of the Marshall Islands Ports Authority – RMIPA and JICA Engineers and Architects have signed the Technical Memorandum of the Preparatory Survey for the Design of the Airport Terminal Building at Amata Kabua International Airport.

​SICDRONE to open a new manufacturing facility at Columbia County’s Scappoose Airport

July 28, 2022 – Robotic aircraft systems manufacturer SICDRONE is set to open a new facility in Scappoose by the fourth quarter of 2022. The company signed a license agreement for 6,000 square feet of corporate hangar space at the Scappoose Airport with plans for a future lease agreement.

The facility will be dedicated to the design and advanced manufacturing of unmanned aircraft systems for military applications, commercial offshore wind farms, and first responder drone programs. SICDRONE anticipates hiring between five to ten software, mechanical, and electrical engineers, along with support staff, in Scappoose. Test flights will be performed at the Tillamook UAS Test Range at the Tillamook Airport and across the state.

Port of San Diego, City of Chula Vista celebrate groundbreaking of Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center

July 27, 2022 — Officials from the Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista gathered for a historic event on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, to ceremonially break ground on the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center – the catalyst project for the Chula Vista Bayfront. They were joined by representatives of Gaylord Hotels and the developer, RIDA Chula Vista, LLC, and hundreds of community supporters of the project.

Matson publishes 2021 sustainability report

July 25, 2022 — Matson, Inc. (NYSE: MATX), a leading U.S. carrier in the Pacific, has published its 2021 Sustainability Report that describes the company’s progress toward achieving its environmental, social and governance goals.

“In a year of extraordinary disruption and upheaval in our industry, Matson devoted more attention and resources than ever to serving the needs of our customers, employees and communities,” said Matt Cox, chairman and chief executive officer. “I am proud of the work we are doing and pleased to share our progress in this year’s Sustainability Report.”

Port of Long Beach elects Sharon Weissman for President

July 25, 2022 — Harbor Commission Vice President Sharon L. Weissman was elected as Board President on Monday to lead the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the five-person board that oversees the Port of Long Beach.

The board also selected Bobby Olvera Jr. as Vice President and Bonnie Lowenthal as Secretary. Every July, Commissioners select a President and two board officers to serve one-year terms. The Commission’s new officers will begin their terms on Aug. 8, when outgoing Commission President Steven Neal will hand the gavel to Weissman at the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting that day.
