"Pack Your OARS: Motivational Interviewing Techniques to Influence Positive Behaviors that Promote Health and Improve Patient Outcomes"

Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based technique that can be used to work with patients to identify their intrinsic motivation for improving health outcomes. In this presentation, we will review how MI techniques were used to teach nurse practitioner students to talk with patients about COVID vaccination. We will also practice using MI techniques to respond to various patient scenarios so that attendees will be more confident using these techniques in practice. The purpose of this presentation is to offer innovative interview strategies to empower nurse practitioners on addressing controversial topics to advance health equity and to improve the health of patient populations.
