Bookseller Favorites Then and Now!
- Evan -
As a child, Evan obviously loved Harry Potter (as you can see), but he also enjoyed adventure stories like “Clarence Goes out West and Meets a Purple Horse” and, as he got a little older, Will Hobbs’ “Downriver.” These days, Evan still loves revisiting these old favorites, but he also enjoys recommending “Where the Wild Things Are” for little readers, and Ursula K. LeGuin’s “Earthsea” for middle grade readers.
- Jeanne -
Jeanne still loves the intriguing world of “The Phantom Tollbooth” created by Norton Juster, and also E.L. Konigsburg’s tale of magic and friendship, “Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth.” Even though Jeanne is in charge of bringing in all of our books for grown-ups, she still has fun recommending titles like Elise Broach’s “Masterpiece” and Andrea Beaty’s “Ada Twist, Scientist.”
- Maya -
In addition to loving “Blueberries for Sal” and “Hatchet” as a child, Maya was also obsessed with the Titanic, so you can imagine her excitement when the I Survived series came out with “I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic (and now it’s a graphic novel too!) She also loves recommending “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan.
- Caleb-
If you ever call Maria’s bookshop, then you have probably spoken to Caleb on the phone at some point or another. He is our inventory manager and takes care of all things shipping and receiving. Although, as an adult, he tends be drawn to books about math and science, as a kid, Caleb enjoyed the tale of “Tikki Tikki Tembo.” He now recommends kids’ books with beautiful illustrations and heart-warming stories.
- Sara -
Sara has always loved a good story that she can get lost in for a while. She’d spend hours as a kid pretending to be Alice in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or imagining that she too had found a magic door to the land of Narnia. Even now she loves recommending adventure stories like Michael Poore’s “Two Girls, A Clock, and a Crooked House” or the Redwall series by Brian Jacques
- Kathleen -
Kathleen was also an E.L. Konigsburg fan as a young reader. She loved “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” and also Judy Blume’sBlubber.” Now Kathleen has her own young reader and has recently enjoyed introducing him to James Riley’sThe Revenge of Magic.” She also appreciates the beautiful art and story of “I Sang You Down from the Stars”
- Sam -
As a young reader, Sam flew right through books like “Where the Wild Things Are” and skipped pretty quickly ahead into tales like Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Sam still loves a good story with wild characters and a little magic. These days he cannot get over the cuteness of Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham’s “Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn” or the fantastic world and story of B.B. Alston’s “Amari and the Night Brothers.” He’s also pretty excited when he finds the right customer for Alvin Schwartz’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”
- Yarrow-
As a kid, Yarrow loved stories with an element of nature like “Stellaluna,” “Julie of the Wolves” and “The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses.” As they’ve gotten older, these stories definitely still resonate, but Yarrow also loves recommending books with a little bit of magic too like “The Tail of Emily Windsnap.”
- Julie -
When Julie was a child, she’d disappear into The Betsy-Tacy Treasury,” “Little House in the Big Woods and “Stewart Little.” As our Children's Book Buyer, now she has a nearly impossible time narrowing down the titles she’d recommend. From kids’ historical fiction like Allan Gratz’sRefugee” to stories about cute, cuddly critters like “A Nest for Celeste” and “The Box Turtle to children’s graphic novels like “New Kid,” Julie loves finding just the right story for every young reader! She even has a few ideas for kids who aren’t quite old enough to enjoy words. Picture books like “Little Fox in the Forest” tell stories without words, so parents and kids can enjoy learning about visual literacy and choosing their own words for the tale.
