"My mother... she is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her." ― Jodi Picoult

Mary joins us after a career as an elementary school teacher, librarian and reading specialist, with a Master's Degree in Literacy. Some of her favorite book genres include fiction, natural science, young adult novels and environmental issues. When she's not selling books at Maria's, she enjoys hiking and mountain biking with her husband and dogs, and tending her 120,000 head of livestock (three beehives).

A Hopeful & Encouraging Read
This latest book by Anne Lamott tackles the essence of hope through the intimate pondering of her own life. From her new marriage (her first, at age 66!), to the climate crisis to a missing kitten (not necessarily in that order) Lamott shares stories that encourage readers to cultivate courage and curiosity in this era of existential exhaustion. She reminds us that our species is good at doing hard things, even in the “third-third” of our lives and even when our feet hurt.
Written for a maturing audience, Lamott shares her often funny and mostly hopeful view of the world through her witty and self-deprecating style, exposing her own vulnerabilities as she ages and wrinkles, and her joints stiffen. She has become more gentle with herself and encourages us to do the same. At the core is a reminder to savor the tiny little moments of life: the call from a friend, the quiet of the rain, a walk in your neighborhood, the purr of a kitten. For Lamott, being present is the only way we can evolve and help to bring change. Through that presence, we can learn to quiet the fearful voice inside that asks, “What if? What if?” and instead, strive to hear the gentle, hopeful voice that asks, “What is, what is?”
If you have enjoyed her other books, then you will find this in keeping with Help, Thanks, Wow, peppered with a few more references to biblical passages and Sunday school stories. It feels like a conversation with a quirky, old friend: the one that you can tell anything to and know that you’re still golden.

If you ever call Maria’s bookshop, then you have probably spoken to Caleb on the phone at some point or another. He is our inventory manager and takes care of all things shipping and receiving. Although, as an adult, he tends be drawn to books about math and science, as a kid, Caleb enjoyed the tale of “Tikki Tikki Tembo.” He now recommends kids’ books with beautiful illustrations and heart-warming stories.
