Summer Anti-racism Series:
Hennepin Avenue UMC presents
An Evening with Jericho Brown
Saturday, June 19 | 6:00 – 8:00pm
in the HAUMC Sanctuary (or virtually)

Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church is delighted to present 2020 Pulitzer-prize-winning poet and professor, Jericho Brown. Brown is at the vanguard of a new generation of Black and gay writers, unwilling to confine their identities. His work is described as “the poetry of bloodship: the meaning of family, of love, of sexuality; the resonances of pain and the possibilities of redemption.” His poems have appeared in The NationThe New YorkerThe New Republic, and The Best American Poetry.

A Jericho Brown reading is an experience: breathtaking moments of sinuous language, punctuated by moments of power, and followed with incisive, warm engagement with the audience. Jericho's interaction and love of empowering the next generation creates an amazing opportunity to engage with a master craftsman in person.

There are two ways to attend... This is a hybrid event, with registered tickets available for in-person or virtual attendance.

In-person Attendance ($20)
Experience Jericho in person, with reserved, socially distanced seating for 150 in the beautiful HAUMC building.

Virtual Attendance ($10)
Virtual attendees will receive access instructions on the day of the event. Please be sure to check your email and spam folders regularly.

Tickets Available Soon! Visit: haumc.org/events

About the Book and Author
In The Second, historian and award-winning, bestselling author of White Rage Carol Anderson powerfully illuminates the history and impact of the Second Amendment, how it was designed, and how it has consistently been constructed to keep African Americans powerless and vulnerable. The Second is neither a “pro-gun” nor an “anti-gun” book; the lens is the citizenship rights and human rights of African Americans. Read More Here
Summer Anti-racism Series: Small Groups
This Is Our Story:
Celebrating and Learning from the Black Church
Wednesdays | June 9, 16, 23, and 30
7–9pm on Zoom

Hennepin Avenue UMC welcomes you to the small group series
This is Our Story-This is Our Song:
Celebrating and Learning from the Black Church

Where does the ministry and mission of the Black church fit into the insistent calls for church that is multi-racial?

How do we become an authentic beloved community that centers BIPOC voices without asking for their surrender of psychological and spiritual safety?

Can we imagine new expressions of worship, culture, and community that bring life to all people?

These are just three of the important questions to ponder on the journey of moving from anti-racism to becoming a truly multicultural congregation. The desire to be multiracial often comes with the hidden assumption that the Black church will be rendered unnecessary. However, the Black church is the oldest, most continuous, and most important institution ever created by, and committed to, the survival and flourishing of African American people,

In this four-week video study, we will celebrate and learn more about the Black church, through watching the documentary, “The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song," the sweeping history of religion, politics, and culture led by Henry Louis Gates Jr., and sharing conversation together about to understand its unique mission and ministry, and its countercultural message of liberation and flourishing that has often run counter to the message found in its mainstream white counterpart.

Each week, participants will watch the four 1-hour segments of the PBS documentary, “The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song," the sweeping history of religion, politics, and culture led by Henry Louis Gates Jr., then come together for a 45-minute conversation.

This four-week study complements the worship series for Pentecost Sunday, which focuses on stories from the book of Acts and the early church, and the new communities that formed across ethnic and racial barriers as the Holy Spirit inspired the spread of Jesus’ message of love and inclusion.

Week 1 – Episode 1: The Freedom Faith, reveals the historic beginnings, as enslaved Africans found ways to preserve culture and beliefs.

Week 2 – Episode 2: A Nation Within a Nation, shares how independent Black churches helped the formerly enslaved navigate emancipation and the promise of Reconstruction.

Week 3 – Episode 3: God will Make a Way, explores the 20th century social, economic, political and ministry changes.

Week 4 - Episode 4: Crisis of Faith, meets the contradictions of liberation, legacy, loss, and leadership after the death of pivotal leaders and the liberation.

This is a virtual study, all activities are online. The study guide can be downloaded. There is no cost, but registration is requested to receive the Zoom link.

Watch a trailer for the PBS documentary series here.

MINISTRY NEWS
Passionate Worship
In the Gospel of Luke, we learn that as the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples, “in their joy they were disbelieving.” We can imagine them saying "We just can't believe it. We just can't believe it!"

But finally, they did believe, and when they did Jesus entrusted them with the task of witnessing this miracle to others. Maybe you, too, find yourself saying, I just can't believe it! – or find yourself wondering what the “it” is that you believe about Easter.

Together we will explore how we understand the mystery of the resurrection, and how we are called to bear witness to the ways that God brings new life and hope into the world.

Traditional Worship Returns
for In-Person Service
Beginning Sunday, May 30, at 10am

We are happy to announce that we intend to transition back to our building for in-person worship on a limited basis beginning Sunday, May 30, for our 10:00am Traditional Worship service in the sanctuary. We will be using a registration system that helps us manage attendance limits for everyone’s safety – more on that below.

Your safety is our priority. Therefore, we’ll be utilizing CDC safety protocols which include distancing, wearing masks, hand sanitizing, and practicing safe entering and exiting procedures for all who participate in in-person worship.

We will not be serving any food or beverages at this time. Sunday school will be available and, whenever possible, will be held outdoors this summer. More specific information will be mailed mid-May.

If you would like to attend the 10:00am Traditional Worship service in person, you will need to register each week. Information on how to register online or by phone will be sent out in mid-May. Registration for each Sunday will open the previous Monday morning at 9:00 AM and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. If the registration fills to capacity–or for any reason you prefer not to return to the building just yet–please continue to worship by livestream (worship services will continue to be available online).

At this time, only the 10:00am Traditional Worship service will be in person. Sacred Journey worship will continue to be streamed online at 8:30am every Sunday as it has been for the past year.

Do you have questions? Comments?
We are hosting four listening posts. Meeting links and numbers are available at haumc.org/events. If you do not have access to a computer and wish to participate via phone, please call the church for call-in information.

Hennepin Scholars and Graduates
Sunday, May 23 on Virtual Worship

Congratulations to our eleven 2021 Hennepin Scholars. These students are attending institutions across the country and Canada, pursuing programs in a variety of subject areas. Their talents and energies are inspiring! Their activities at Hennepin have included mission trips, volunteering for Vacation Bible School and Sunday school, serving community meals, youth choir, and council. They have excelled in academics, music and drama, community service, sports, as well as in leadership roles.

Hennepin Scholars are recognized annually with scholarship funds contributed by generous Hennepin members. The scholarships provide both encouragement and financial assistance for students in pursuing their dreams. In application essays, the students highlight their educational and career goals and how scholarships will help finance their plans. The comments reflect not only their ambitions and planning but also their heartfelt interest in serving others and their appreciation for Hennepin Avenue UMC.

Contributions to Hennepin Scholars funds are welcome anytime. For more information, contact Jack Fistler, Director of Legacy Giving: jack@haumc.org

Walk for Hope: Fundraiser to Support Common Hope
Sunday, June 13 | 12noon

Hello HAUMC Amigos!

This year we are registered again to Walk For Hope in honor of Ana and Josue (our sponsored students in Guatemala). We are going the extra mile this year to support the 3000+ students that Common Hope supports! Will you join us?

1.    Join our team or donate to our page and help us spread the word with your friends! https://give.commonhope.org/HAUMCWalk2021

·       $96 helps fund one month of support for a student!
·       $576 helps fund six months of support for a student!
·       $1,152 helps fund one year of support for a student!

2.     Walk with us on Sunday, June 13th, at noon. We will meet at HAUMC’s parking lot. Everyone is welcome!

We walk because less than 20% of kids graduate from high school in Guatemala. We walk to support education for students living in poverty so that they can graduate from high school and help end generational poverty for their families. We walk for the kids just starting school, where they will likely hold a book for the first time. We walk, so families have access to quality health care. We walk to help young people dream, grow, and succeed. We walk the Extra Mile to fight poverty with diplomas!

Last year, walkers raised more than $115,000 for Common Hope programs! Every dollar you raise Walking for Hope directly supports education for kids, health care, housing, and programs for their entire family.
Visit www.commonhope.org to learn more or contact Teresa Bettmann at TeresaB@us.commonhope.org if you have questions or need additional information!
