Kimberly Daniels Taws of The Country Bookshop will interview Brendan Slocumb in the Great Room of the Boyd House at Weymouth as part of "Weymouth Wonderful 100," a year-long celebration of 100 events commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Boyd House in 2022.

An audience Q & A will follow.

More about the Novel

Slocumb's debut novel, "The Violin Conspiracy," is a riveting tale about a Black classical musician whose family heirloom violin is stolen on the eve of the most prestigious classical music competition in the world... Ray is determined to get it back. But now his family and the descendants of the man who once enslaved Ray's great-grandfather are each claiming that the violin belongs to them. With the odds stacked against him and the pressure mounting, will Ray ever see his beloved violin again?

Tickets are $28 and include a signed copy of "The Violin Conspiracy."

Freedom Park Series, Part 2

March 13 2PM

“Freedom Park: The Inspiring Story of How a Monument to Freedom is Built While Confederate Statues are Coming Down”

-- Speakers, Reginald Hildebrand and Reginald Hodges

Dr Reginold Hildebrand.jpg

Reginald Hildebrand is an author and former co-chair of the North Carolina Freedom Monument Project. Hildebrand has dedicated his career to African American Studies and History as a professor both at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

REggie Hodges head shoyt.jpg

Reginald Hodges is a member of the North Carolina Freedom Park board of directors, and former Executive Director of the Durham Literacy Center, 2004-2014. He's an avid collector of African Art of which he has donated hundreds of statues, textiles, and vintage photographs to museums across the country.

More about the 20-Year Journey to Freedom Park...

In 2001, the Paul Green Foundation initiated a tribute to the African American struggle for freedom in this state. After twenty years of planning and fundraising, ground was broken in 2021 in the center of Raleigh for North Carolina Freedom Park. Designed by the late Phil Freelon (lead architect of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.), the Park will provide a more complete story of North Carolina’s history to visitors and thousands of school children who annually come by bus from across the state for their 4th and 8th grade study of North Carolina history. Freedom Park will highlight the history and accomplishments of Black North Carolinians and is, in the words of Dr. John Hope Franklin, “…a continuing reminder of…how much more we need to do to achieve equity and justice in our society.” Ribbon cutting will be in late 2022.

Weymouth’s “Freedom Park” Two-Part Arts & Humanities Lecture series is generously sponsored by Deirdre Newton.

From Director of Property Management, Alex Klalo:

A special thank you to Weymouth's core volunteer group, the Dirt Gardeners, who put in a lot of hard work in helping with the property clean up from the recent ice storm. As always they come through no matter what mother nature throws our way, whether it's an ice or snow storm or a hurricane. They make every inch of Weymouth's 26 acre property not only a place of beauty year round but also a safe one for the numerous people, canines, and occasional horses that enjoy our grounds. Joining our Dirt Gardeners in the clean-up effort were sisters of the Church of Latter Day Saints and John Talton, who saved a number of trees on our grounds. Thank you to our volunteers!
