FIRE DEPARTMENT HONORS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The Swampscott Fire Department is selling T-shirts during the month of October to raise money for the Ellie Fund, which provides financial support for families dealing with a caregiver with breast cancer.

T-Shirts, adorned with the SFD Logo and the words “Fighting More than Fires – Let’s Extinguish Breast Cancer” will be on sale at the Swampscott Fire Department and Town Hall Customer Service during normal business hours.

  • Pink short sleeve T-shirts: $20
  • Gray long-sleeve T-shirts: $25

T-shirts can be purchased by cash or check.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE
POLICE DEPARTMENT?
POLICE DEPARTMENT FORMS MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE

The Swampscott Police Department Criminal Justice Mental Health Task Force will utilize an integrated public health and public safety collaboration to respond to individuals impacted by behavioral health. The task force will also support officer wellness, develop policy and procedures, and improve communication across behavioral health and criminal justice partners.
  

SWAMPSCOTT POLICE DEPARTMENT SEEKS INTERN!

The Swampscott PD is currently seeking an intern to work with members of the newly formed Mental Health Task Force.

The chosen intern should have a focus on public health and mental health issues and be willing to learn how the mental health professionals deal with law enforcement with "wrap around services" to assist a person in crisis.
POLICE DEPARTMENT AWARDED TRAINING GRANT!
Through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the US Department of Justice, a grant has been awarded that will provide the entire Swampscott Police staff with innovative and progressive training.

This newly developed training will feature innovative stress responses while introducing proven, yet simple decision-making models to directly impact work / life balance and regulating disruptive thoughts and distracting emotions.

SAFE HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES

  • Outdoor activities are best
  • Carve or decorate a pumpkin
  • Decorate your house and yard
  • Have virtual costume contest
  • Plan an outdoor Halloween scavenger hunt
  • Avoid holding parties or gathering inside and avoid crowds

HANDING OUT TREATS

  • Do not give out candy if you are sick or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19
  • Put out individually wrapped goodie bags or candy spaced out on a baking sheet or put individually wrapped candy into child’s basket
  • Do not leave out candy in a bowl
  • Wear a mask
TRICK-OR-TREATERS

  • Stay home if you are sick or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19
  • Go trick-or-treating with your child to make sure they do it safely
  • Keep your groups as small as possible and avoid crowds
  • Wear a mask (not just a Halloween costume mask, that may not be safe from COVID-19 particles!)
  • Carry hand sanitizer to use between each house

DPW has been busy paving close to 20 streets throughout Town, including Atlantic Rd., Shelton Rd., Linden Ave. Ocean View Rd., Huron Ave., Beverly Road, and more!

Grant awards generally range from $200 to $750.
The deadline has been extended and applicants can apply online by November 1, 2021 through the Massachusetts Cultural Council portal at www.massculturalcouncil.org.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Redevelopment of Swampscott Pier at Fisherman's Beach
Public Meeting
Thursday, October 28 @ 7:00 PM on Zoom

The 2018 Harbor and Waterfront Plan identified redevelopment of the Swampscott Pier as a project that would enhance recreational and economic opportunities along Fisherman Beach. The Town has received funding from the Seaport Economic Council to conduct research, testing, and preliminary design of an expanded pier structure. The community is invited to join this meeting which will cover the background of the project, the scope of work, timeline, and development of project goals.

SWAMPSCOTT ART ASSOCIATION EXHIBIT
AT THE SENIOR CENTER

From October 3, 2021 through the end of November, the Swampscott Art Association will showcase member artwork at the Senior Center. The artwork is viewable during normal Center operating hours at 200R Essex St. between Monday-Friday, 9:00am-3:00pm.

SWAMPY-CON 2021!
SwampyCon 2021 was a huge success! Over 120 kids and adults stopped by the library on Saturday, October 16 to battle a surprise invader, make slime, and more!
RED ROCK LITERARY FESTIVAL
November 6 & 7
ReachArts and the Swampscott Public Library have teamed up to present the first ever Red Rock Literary Festival, featuring dozens of resident writers, editors, graphic designers, and teachers.

METAL RECYCLING & STYROFOAM DISPOSAL
Next date: Saturday, October 30
Don't forget - on the final Saturday of each month (excluding Feb & March) residents can stop by the DPW Yard at 200 Paradise Rd. between 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM to drop-off metal items for recycling, and styrofoam for disposal.
