Spring is almost here!
Dear Friends:

The past year has been challenging in every way possible. Many of us have turned to nature and our home gardens as a refuge and place to safely socialize with family and friends.

We are excited to welcome Spring and have planned some enjoyable ways to venture outdoors and enjoy her beauty. Highlights include our Gaiety Hollow Open Gardens that resume on April 10, Deepwood Gardens tours starting on April 15, and our annual Neighborhood Garden Tour planned for June 5 & 6. COVID-19 protocols of wearing masks and social distancing will be followed for all garden events.

If you haven’t already, sign up to receive our Weekly Blog. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook where you can share your gardening experiences at #lordschryver. And always feel free to connect with us directly at [email protected].

Explore Leach Botanical Garden
with David Porter
The 16-acre garden, located in outer Southeast Portland, is owned by Portland Parks & Recreation. With capital project funds from both private and public sources, the Garden is just completing substantial capital improvements including a pollinator and habitat garden and an aerial tree walk.

David Porter spent the last decade as its Executive Director, retiring in early 2021. He will take us on a behind the scenes tour of this beautiful garden as well as share the fascinating history of its founders, Lilla and John Leach.

"He Paints with Lakes and Wooded Slopes"
Frederick Law Olmsted and the Founding of American Landscape Architecture
with Suzanne Rinehart Bishop
Olmsted was famous for designing many well-known parks, campuses, and housing developments including Central Park in New York City. To Olmsted, parks were as much about the mental, physical, and social health of communities as they were about aesthetics and his theories about the restorative benefits of time spent in nature and the democratic value of public parks are now proven.

Portland native Suzanne Bishop, a student of the history of Oregon gardens and landscapes, looks forward to sharing Olmsted's history and accomplishments.

With Appreciation

We are honored to have been recognized by two national organizations. The Garden Conservancy selected Gaiety Hollow as one of six gardens to receive a Gardens for Good grant. Also, the Cultural Landscape Foundation recognized the work of Lord & Schryver in its Landslide 2020 Women Take the Lead program. Finally, we are grateful for a recent bequest that has enabled us to establish an endowment with the Oregon Community Foundation.

We appreciate the ongoing generosity from our supporters including these organizations who have advised and assisted us over the years.
