MITTEN TREE

The final tally of items found on our Mitten Tree this year. There were 18 toboggans. 1 earmuff; 31 mittens/gloves; 45 pair of socks; 2 leg warmers; and 17 scarves. All items have been taken to Good Sam. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Let's see if we can outdo these totals next Advent Season.

FROM THE PASTOR

Many of us are familiar with the story of Epiphany. The story of the Wise Men or the Magi coming to bring the gifts of Frankincense, Myrrh, and Gold to the Christ child in Bethlehem. But the word Epiphany comes from the Greek word meaning “appearance” or “manifestation.” Some scholars have even likened the word epiphany to our English expression of “Aha!” or “Eureka!” Epiphany is this special moment where the light bulb is turned on, and we can now see what was once hidden. And it is for those reasons that we continue to tell the story of the Word that became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood. The Word that is the life and light of the world. So come and see how this light offers freedom. A freedom that is from the darkness, and a freedom for the Kingdom of God.

Yours in Christ,

Brandon

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Who is this lady in blue in our garden?

GREEN SPACE

Chocolate is associated with many holidays and accounts for more than $20 billion a year in US sales alone. Nevertheless, consumers may be unaware that cocoa beans, chocolate's key ingredient, are linked to deforestation, human rights abuses, and the biodiversity crisis. Though cocoa is grown in tropical regions across the globe, roughly two-thirds of production is concentrated in West Africa's Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, where tropical forests are being replaced by cocoa crops. Côte d'Ivoire has lost more than 85% of its forest cover since 1960, mainly to keep up with high demand for cocoa. This deforestation destroys critical wildlife habitat while monocropping depletes the soil and leaves crops susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

Thankfully, high-quality, sustainably produced cocoa is within reach for consumers.  Shade-grown cocoa agroforestry, where cocoa is grown among diverse crops and trees, boosts carbon sequestration and water regulation. It also provides habitat for wildlife and can enhance cocoa farmers' livelihood. To help consumers find ethical and environmentally friendly chocolate, the National Wildlife Federation has created a chocolate shopping guide which ranks more than 80% of global chocolate brands based on their social and environmental performance. It can be found online.    (GSN #130)

Opening Up the Bible

By Mary Batchelor

(220.6/BAT)

Suitable for readers familiar with the Bible and those who are coming to it fresh, this book explores what the Bible has to say, why it has such an important place in Western culture and how its abiding message speaks to readers today. The book provides an overview of 2000 years of history and a succession of cultures, introducing readers to the many kinds of writing brought together in the Bible's pages - history, law, poetry, wisdom, narrative, prophecy and biography.

It acts as a "guided tour" through each Bible, with brief summaries, highlights, important issues, key quotations and excerpts and essential information about historical context. Unlike "The Lion Handbook to the Bible", this book does not require a Bible alongside, or any commitment other than interest on the part of the reader. It is designed as an appetizer, to lead the reader on to read the Bible itself.

Mary Batchelor is the author of "The Children's Bible in 365 Stories" and "The Story of Jesus".
