Katelyn Robinson named Teacher of the Year

66047c983c934 image

CAMBRIDGE — On the evening of March 26, Katelyn Robinson, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Maple Elementary School, screamed with pure joy as she was named Teacher of the Year by Dorchester County Public Schools administrators.

Around her, peers, friends and family stood and cheered in celebration of her accomplishment.

Robinson’s second-grade teacher, Barbara Mills, provided kind words through a prerecorded video.

“I knew then that Katelyn was just a bright ray of sunshine,” Mills said. “She understood what we were trying to do in class was to make it a place that we wanted to come to every day, where we can learn and everybody can be themselves … I can’t think of anybody that would be more deserving than you.”

For All Seasons Sponsors Lunch and Learn - Human Trafficking

AhlstromSusan2 image

For All Seasons will sponsor a Lunch & Learn, “Human Trafficking 101,” on April 10 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce in Cambridge. In 2024, For All Seasons expanded its human trafficking awareness efforts to engage the Shore’s business community in a more significant way to be a part of the solution, specifically, to know what to look for and how to report suspected incidents of

trafficking. The International Labor Organization estimates that forced labor and human trafficking is a

$150 billion industry worldwide.

“A primary focus of For All Seasons’ Human Trafficking Program is to expand outreach and education on

Human Trafficking to inform the community. For All Seasons’ Center for Learning is committed to leading the way in having a positive impact in this regard and helping community members learn about how to question, connect, and act against vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking and exploitation in our region,” Susan Ahlstrom, Regional Human Trafficking Navigator, comments.

25 Years and Counting: Choptank Health in Mid-Shore Schools

In 1980, Choptank Community Health System opened its first health center in Goldsboro, embarking on a dedicated mission to enhance the well-being of residents, including children.

Choptank Health ventured into school-based health centers in 1999 with support from the Public Health Service’s Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities grant. Launching initially in Caroline County, partnerships with local schools, health departments, and the University of Maryland School of Nursing were pivotal.

Now, with 18 physical school-based health sites across five counties, Choptank Community Health offers comprehensive services within schools, including medical, behavioral, nutritional, and dental care. This innovative approach ensures students and their families receive the necessary support right in their school environment, significantly impacting community health and educational success. Celebrating 25 years of service, this milestone reflects the dedication and impact of school-based health centers in fostering healthier, more informed communities.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

You can follow activity of the Maryland 2024 Legislative session on this link:

https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Legislation/Charts

H2B Visa Bill

There has been a bill introduced in the US Senate (S.3013) that would help to resolve the issue faced by Dorchester County crab processors each year. The bill would authorize the exemption of aliens working as fish processors from the numerical limitation on H-2B nonimmigrant visas.

Just a quick reminder that the current process is a random lottery that is done for all US employers looking to hire the limited number of H2B workers allowed to enter the country each year. If a business gets a bad draw in the lottery, they do not get the employees they need for their business to operate. This has provided a significant challenge for the local seafood industry for years and has caused many businesses to close for a season or more and some for good.

These workers are not taking jobs away from US Citizens as it has been proven year over year that the positions not filled by the H2B workers in the crab processing industry remain open and the businesses are unable to operate.

We ask that you contact Senators with influence on this bill to let them know you support the bill and our vitally important seafood industry in Maryland:

The Honorable Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)

The Honorable Chuck Grassley (R-IA)

The Honorable Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

The Honorable Tom Cotton (R-AR)

Excellence in Quality of Life Awards

The Excellence in Quality of Life Awards recognize community partners — hospitals, medical providers, healthcare industry, and other organizations — that share our goal of enhancing the quality of life of our patients and families. These organizations and healthcare professionals are not only paragons of standards of care in their own right, they also share our mission of promoting dignity and quality of life to those facing life-limiting conditions. In the frame of our 44th Anniversary, Coastal Hospice invites you to honor these partnerships. Vote for the nominees and celebrate with us, by attending and sponsoring our first Excellence in Quality of Life Awards. Join us as we celebrate 44 years of partnerships and excellence in care of the lower eastern shore.

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar

Start your weight-loss journey today

Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.

These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.

TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.

Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.

The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.

Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.

When Wylde Women Dream

For Cambridge artist, Tammy Vitale, things that seem worn, torn or broken to most people are her treasures. She takes these cast offs and dreams up a new life for them by refashioning them into something different and altogether new! Colorful collages and engaging mixed media art pieces come to life under her skilled and creative hands. For March and April Tammy will be showing her collages and mixed media work along with pieces of her beadwork jewelry at the Main Street Gallery where she will be a guest artist. alongside the work of the gallery’s nine member artists.

When asked about the creative spelling of wylde, Tammy explained that she was part of a coop gallery in Southern Maryland where the women artists called themselves “wylde women” to express their open and experimental approach to their art. Wild became wylde to differentiate the word from meanings that might come up in an online search.

When Wylde Women Dream will open on February 29 and run through April 28. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays from 11-4pm through March and 11-5 starting in April. Two Second Saturday artist receptions are planned for March 9 and April13 from 5-8pm. Tammy will be giving a brief artist talk at 6 pm at the April reception. Both receptions are free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. The gallery asks that children under 18 be accompanied by an adult. Tammy will also be giving a fun, family friendly workshop on making tiny totems on Saturday March 2 from noon to 4 pm at the gallery. All are invited to attend.

Main Street Gallery is located at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge, and is part of the vibrant Arts and Entertainment District. The gallery is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. Please contact MSG through its website https://www.mainstgallery.net or by phoning 410-330-4659 if interested.
