Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact
Greetings!

How did we end up here, in 2022, still in the midst of a raging pandemic? I'm not exactly sure, but I'm personally trying not to dwell on the "fun fact" I learned this morning--that the 1973 file Soylent Green is based in 2022. As we all look for the rays of sunlight and hope that typically accompany each New Year, HandsOn remains cautiously optimistic about our plans in 2022, even as we try not to tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing. :) Here's just a few items that we hope the pandemic won't disrupt in the coming months:

  • Successfully onboard four new board members! We're excited to welcome Lisa Allen, a nurse and case manager for Aetna; Mark Batten, Executive Director of Community Engagement for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools; Henry Hilston, an attorney at Blanco Tackabery; and, last but not least, Martha Larson, the Director of the Davidson-Davie Community College Small Business Center. We're excited by the diversity of life experiences represented by these board members and the passion and perspective that they'll bring to the mission of HandsOn in 2022.

If there is one lesson that I have learned again and again since March 2020 is that it is pretty much impossible to plan during a pandemic. Well, one certainly can *think* they're planning, but the pandemic always seems to have other ideas. This same lesson is also one about flexibility, humility, and providing grace for oneself and others--as we work to recognize that we're all just doing the best we can under difficult and ever-changing circumstances. I hope that you continue to greet the challenges and blessings of this new year with the same wells of grace, determination, and resilience that we've all relied upon for the past two years. And, as always, let us know how we can help you do that better. :)

Here's wishing you continued safety and wellness in 2022!
Amy

Executive Director

Don't Forget to Nominate Your Favorite Volunteer!

NOMINATION DEADLINE: January 31st, 2022!

IN-PERSON BREAKFAST DATE: April 26th, 2022!

Each year, HandsOn hosts the Forsyth County's Governor's Volunteer Service Awards to honor all of the amazing volunteers throughout our community. However, we can't do this effectively unless you share their stories of service with us!

The Governor's Office has released the 2022 nomination form and it is now live on their website! All online applications that originate in Forsyth County will be forwarded to us here at HandsOn, where a volunteer committee will read, review, and make the selection of our category winners that we'll announce during the breakfast. While there are PDF and Word versions of the application available, we hope everyone will make the much easier choice and use the online form!

We're also *extremely excited* to announce that we're planning to host an in-person breakfast once again in April 2022 at Novant Medical Center's Conference Center! Attendance will be extremely limited, with priority going to nominees. Other strict COVID protocols will be in place. While we will still have a strong social media component to this recognition program, we're hopeful we can be together again in-person! Event and table sponsorships are what allows us to offer this breakfast free of charge to all of our nominees, and they start at just $300! Since individual tickets will be even more limited than in the past, sponsoring a table early will be the best way to ensure that you will be able to attend with your nominee. More details about the breakfast will be in next month's newsletter, but the most important step is to get those volunteer nominations in!

Have questions about the nomination form or any other aspect of the event? Please reach out to Casey with your questions!

2021-2022 Nonprofit Essentials:
Working with Leaders in Grassroots Communities
Thursday, January 20th, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Location: Zoom

Our fifth Nonprofit Essentials class focuses on the ability to work with folks from all neighborhoods and with diverse life experiences. As the sector becomes more focused on equity, collective impact, place-based initiatives, and asset-based community development in general, this skill has become crucial to the success of individual nonprofits and their leaders. This class provides a basis for engaging in mission-focused work from an asset-based and community-driven framework.

The class is taught by Paula McCoy, the Director for The Partnership for Prosperity, an initiative that came as a recommendation from the Winston-Salem Mayor's ThoughtForce on Poverty.  Paula is the former Executive Director of Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN), (Aug 2013-Jan 31, 2019), a neighborhood support organization whose mission is to connect people, strengthen voices, leverage resources within community to create safe, just and self-determined neighborhoods. She received her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from North Carolina A&T State University earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Education Administration and Supervision. Since 1985, Paula has worked with numerous individuals, businesses and community-based organizations in the areas of personal, professional, organizational and community development. She considers this as her “life work”. Paula’s philosophy is “look at life through the wind-shield, not the rear view mirror.”

Nonprofit Essentials is a monthly series of 10 classes designed to provide the "essentials" needed by nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteer leaders to be successful in the sector. Classes can be taken individually, or as a full series, which can be started at any time. Offered in partnership with Wake Forest University's Office of Civic and Community Engagement for more than a decade, the classes are taught primarily by Wake Forest University staff, faculty, and alums. At least through 2021, all classes will be held online, with the possibility of hybrid classes later in 2022.

Visit our website to find out more about the full series, including dates for remaining sessions and "advanced" sessions for some topics. All of our Nonprofit Essentials sessions are live, highly interactive, discussion-based, and rely upon the active participation of our attendees to ensure a high-quality, synchronous learning experience. Therefore, they will not be recorded.

Cost: $50 for Supporting Partners, $60 for all others
Full Series: $450 for SPs, $550 for all others (the series can be started with any class)

Not sure if your organization is a Supporting Partner? Please check the list on the Join/Give Now page on our website or call 336-724-2866. While classes cannot be offered entirely for free, if full payment is a barrier to your organization's participation in this program, please contact us. The 2021-2022 Nonprofit Essentials series is financially supported by a donation from Pinnacle Financial Partners, as we both want to ensure that small, grassroots organizations and those led by people of color can benefit from these sessions.

MLK Day of Service Read-In: Saturday, January 22nd!
Saturday, January 22nd
Location: Winston-Salem State University
We remain excited and optimistic about once again hosting our MLK Day of Service Read-In LIVE AND IN-PERSON on the campus of Winston-Salem State University!

For more than a decade, HandsOn has partnered with Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and others to present this "Read-In" event that matches youth aged 4-10 with a typically college-aged volunteer to take part in a morning of varied activities that relate to Dr. King's legacy of service, literacy, social justice, and self-sufficiency. We've spent months in careful planning to ensure that we keep both our youth participants and our volunteers as safe as possible, while still relishing the opportunity to be together, building connections and allowing our participants to enjoy the experience of being on a college campus.

Due to the popularity of this event, as well as our COVID-related limited capacity, all of our volunteer and participant spots are already taken. However, if you're still interested in learning more, please don't hesitate to reach out to Robert.
Quarterly Youth Engagement Coalition Meeting

Thursday, February 8th, 4:00 pm

We'll announce the winners of our latest round of youth mini-grants, discuss plans for our next Youth Service Fair, and gather other ideas for youth service engagement in the new year. Join us to help plan our 2022 calendar!

The Youth Engagement Coalition was founded in 2020 as a collaboration between HandsOn NWNC, Wake Forest University's Office of Civic and Community Engagement, and the Forsyth County Young Leaders Program. Membership in the YEC is open to all organizations and youth that are interested in furthering youth engagement in service.

2021-2022 Nonprofit Essentials:
Fund Development Basics OR Advanced
Basics Session:
Thursday, February 17th, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

OR
Advanced Session:
Thursday, February 24th, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our sixth session of Nonprofit Essentials is designed to meet the real-world needs and challenges nonprofit organizations face every day related to fundraising. We're excited to once again offer both a Basics and an Advanced session, depending on a person's level of fund development experience.

The Fund Development Basics course is taught in an active learning style and includes case studies and a take-away project, making the learning experience both substantive and enjoyable. The course offers a complete overview of the development function, featuring the most current information and techniques, and will provide an overview of skills, strategies, and program components for individuals with 0-4 years of fundraising experience. Particular emphasis will be dedicated to discussing how COVID-19 has impacted the work of nonprofit development offices and their ability to raise critical philanthropic support to meet an organization’s needs.

The Advanced course will focus on current and prospective donor research strategies and techniques, securing the gift, and relationship development. Specifically, participants will work together to learn how to: craft a case for support in order to communicate the rationale for supporting the organization’s mission, prepare donor-focused solicitation communications to facilitate informed gift decisions, initiate and strengthen relationships with constituents through systematic cultivation and stewardship plans designed to build trust in, and long-term commitment to, the organization, develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to inform constituents about the organization’s mission, vision, values, financial and ethical practices, funding priorities, and gift opportunities. Participants will be asked to share with the presenter prior to the class at least two samples from their organization of the following: case for support, direct mail appeal package, major gift proposal, stewardship and cultivation plan, communications plan, gift acceptance policy, newsletter/impact reports, annual report, your job description, volunteer and or board member job description. If you do not know about, or do not have the above examples readily available to share, you are not ready for the Advanced class, and we recommend you take the Basics class instead.

The instructor for both sessions, Michelle Speas, brings over 20 years’ experience in Japan, Africa and the United States to her executive leadership, including her current role as Vice President of Philanthropy and Public Relations at Family Services, a HandsOn Supporting Partner that's one of the Triad’s largest nonprofit organizations and is committed to strengthening the safety, security, and well-being of women, children and families in our community. For the majority of her career, she worked as a development officer, directing annual, capital, and planned giving campaigns and spearheading communication and public relations efforts. She has been a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) for over 10 years and served as the first Chief Executive Officer of one of NC’s largest private family foundations. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Arts (MA) degree in from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. Michelle has been a member of the NC Triad Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals since 1997 and has served on over a dozen Triad nonprofit boards.

NEWS YOU CAN USE!
IRS Increases Standard Mileage Business Rate
for 2022!

The IRS announced last month that the standard business mileage rate will increase to 58.5 cents per mile in 2022 (up from 56 cents per mile in 2021). This is the rate that many nonprofits--including HandsOn NWNC--uses when reimbursing their employees for mileage. The volunteer mileage rate (what volunteers can deduct for their unreimbursed mileage) remains at 14 cents per mile--as it has been for decades--since it will literally take a separate act of Congress to change it. (Please don't hold your breath waiting for it!) Many thanks to our friends at the NC Center for Nonprofits for the head's up!
Forsyth Futures Shares the Real Data on the State of Forsyth County's Labor Market!

We've all heard about "The Great Resignation" and how difficult it can be to attract and retain talent these days--especially in the nonprofit sector, which struggles to compete when it comes to pay and benefits.

Last month, Forsyth Futures shared this blog post, which looked deeply at the state of employment in our community and discovered--surprise, surprise!--that employment and the total number of people in the labor force was almost back up to pre-pandemic levels.

Take a look at full the blog post if you like pretty graphs, and if you want reassurance about filling all those open positions.

Based on a different report released last month from the National Council of Nonprofits, it seems like Forsyth County may be doing better than its peers. The report identified salary competition and inability to find adequate child care as the two biggest sources of staffing challenges for nonprofits, and suggests policy changes to help address them.
