Advisory Board Changes
Regretfully, we report that Anuska Frey, our advisory board communications chair, has resigned. She needs to spend more time on her family business, and we respect her decision - although we will miss her talent, expertise and lovely presence greatly. Best of luck, Anuska; thank you for all your time and professional expertise over the past two years!

On a happy note, we welcome into the advisory board communications chair, Gloria Maxfield. Gloria (Gigi) is a local financial advisor concentrating her practice, Women’s Worth Advisors, on money management and investing for women. Her previous work experiences were for Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses in New York, and several art galleries where she worked in management and public relations. Gigi will be organizing our newsletter and enhancing our presence in the local media wherever possible.

Women's History Event
Please join us on March 20 at 10 a.m. for a visit to Historic Mitchelville.

We hope you saw the article in the Island Packet, designating Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park to the state's Reconstruction-era historic park roster. Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is located off Beach City Road, with a marker at the entrance of Fish Haul Creek Park.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Dr. Ahmad Ward and his colleagues will take us through local history with a focus on the impact of women on those events. This program complements the discussion by the authors of Gullah Days.

We’ll be outside, celebrating the first day of spring! This is a good opportunity to bring a guest. Please let Lesley Gilbert know if you plan to attend or if you have any questions. Her contact information is 843-342-5775 or LCG1687@aol.com.
Welcome Our New Member
Janet Porter and her husband, Jim O’Sullivan, moved to Hilton Head Island from Boston nine years ago. Janet was a hospital administrator and professor; she currently serves as a faculty member, consultant and board member nationally. Locally, she chairs the Hospice of the Lowcountry board and serves on the Beaufort County Library and Hilton Head Hospital boards.

Honoring Our WIP Women's History
In 2002, Community Foundation of the Lowcountry recognized the national phenomenon of women’s giving circles. Inspired by its research, the Community Foundation reached out to a group of women to start a giving circle that would focus on local community needs. Thus, Women in Philanthropy was established. In January 2003, the first advisory board, consisting of Susan Ketchum, chair; Jane Carty, Liz Clist, Trish Heichel, Beryl LaMotte, Mary Noonan and Helen Payne, held its first meeting. These women subsequently involved 100 women in this philanthropic community to give $3,000 over three years to establish our endowment fund, which has now grown to well over $1 million dollars.

Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge
On March 3, WIP was honored to host the three authors of the book Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge, during which they covered the impact of national history on the Gullah community and vice versa. They wove in family stories that personalized these broader events. Those of us who have read the book and were on the Zoom event will never look at our Hilton Head community in quite the same way. Our thanks to Thomas Barnwell, Jr., Carolyn Grant and Emory Shaw Campbell.

If you'd like to help preserve the Gullah culture, consider buying the book for yourself or to donate to a history department at a high school or university.

Contact Lesley Gilbert at LCG1687@aol.com if you're interested in participating. Books can be purchased at any of the locations shown in the flyer below. You can also click here.
