COMMUNITY SAFETY REIMAGINED
|
|
Our first Safe Neighbor program was a great success! In partnership with the San Jose Police Department Crime Prevention Unit, we've created the Safe Neighbor Program, to provide safety training to members of our community. We were joined by Police Chief Anthony Mata, Captain Todd Trayer, Captain Carlos Acosta, as well as Sandra Garcia and Mimi-Cristien Nguyen from the Crime Prevention Unit.
Nothing replaces community engagement. When we work together, we're all safer and I'm excited about being able to spend time with the people we serve. - Captain Todd Trayer, Foothill Division
|
|
The goal is to develop a partnership between law enforcement and the community in order to establish a collaborative relationship. By offering our residents safety training, we can all look out for each other and teach others the tools and knowledge needed to create a safer city. This was the first of what I hope will be many future events, and with the feedback we've gotten, we will be working to expand and evolve the program.
I see the current District 4 leadership as so much more proactive and sincerely serious about improving the health and welfare of our community. I'm very grateful for that.
- Susan D’Alessandro, District 4 Resident

Thank you to Crime Prevention Specialist Sandra Garcia, Councilmember David Cohen, and his staff for putting together this Safe Neighbor Community Safety event. The San Jose Police Department is committed to developing community partners, and events like these help make that happen. - San Jose Chief of Police Anthony Mata
The training was focused on the following subjects:
- Personal Safety
- Awareness of Surroundings
- Distractions that put us in Danger
- Suspicious Behavior
- Neighborhood Safety
- Crime Prevention through Environmental Design
- Reporting to Police
- Reporting other issues
My office is now planning the next event and, as we do so, we would like to get a sense of how comfortable our residents would be meeting inside. This would allow us a bit more flexibility in location and venue selection, so your input would be greatly appreciated.
|
|
Would you be comfortable meeting indoors?
|
|
|
|
As The City of San Jose lifts restrictions, The Crime Prevention Unit is cautiously bringing back in person meetings on safety presentations and we look forward to seeing the residents of San Jose in a safe and comfortable environment. - Sandra Garcia, Crime Prevention Unit
For more information on presentations we offer and/or to set up a presentation such as a Neighborhood Watch, please contact The Crime Prevention Unit at 408-277-4133.
I'd like to thank everyone who attended, the members of the SJPD, Chief Mata, the Captains and the members of the Crime Prevention Unit for working with my staff to make this event a success.
We'll be announcing the date and time of the next event very soon. Stay tuned!
Sincerely,

SANTA CLARA COUNTY MOVES TO YELLOW TIER
VACCINES WIDELY AVAILABLE
|
|
Santa Clara County Department of Public Health officials announced on Tuesday that the County has made huge progress in the fight against COVID-19, resulting in us getting moved to the Yellow Tier. This progress is thanks in large part to the number of residents who have received at least their first dose of the vaccine.
The Yellow Tier is the least restrictive and means that the danger of COVID transmission is minimal. You can read the health department’s orders under the Yellow Tier here. It is crucial that residents continue receiving their COVID vaccines to further reduce the threat of transmission or severe illness due to COVID. Anyone 12 years of age or older can now get the vaccine, and vaccines are widely available in our County, with several vaccination sites in our District and surrounding areas close by.
|
|
Next Friday, May 28, the Berryessa Union School District, in collaboration with Safeway, will host a drive-up vaccination clinic at Sierramont Middle School, 3155 Kimlee Drive, from 12:30-7:30 p.m. for children 12-15 years old.
Within District 4, vaccinations are also administered on a drop-in basis at North East Medical Services, 1870 Lundy Ave. You can find the schedule for that vaccination clinic as well as times and addresses of other vaccination clinics throughout our county here.
|
|
For the residents of the northernmost parts of District 4, Cisco Systems (at Parking Structure 2, 350 E. Tasman Drive) might be the closest option for vaccinations. The drive-up vaccination clinic there is held Mon.-Fri from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. You may have to register for a vaccine depending on your age, so check here to see if you need to register.

LIBRARIES REOPENING STARTING MONDAY, MAY 24
Starting Monday, May 24, the San José Public Library will begin to reopen select library locations for limited in-person browsing, self-service, and technology access at 50% capacity.
We have been working closely with the City’s Emergency Operations Center and City Manager’s Office to develop a strategic, four-phased reopening plan, which applies the Library’s equity index to ensure that we prioritize branches in lower-resourced communities, while remaining in adherence to County Public Health and City safety guidelines. The reopening plan also takes into account the ability to fill vacant public services staff positions.
The table below illustrates the anticipated phases and proposed target dates for reopening, which may be subject to change. The branches highlighted in bold are the locations that currently offer indoor Tech Access.
|
|
During our initial reopening, customers will be able to safely visit the Library from Monday-Friday 1-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. to access the following services:
- Limited Browsing (1-hour limit)
- Check out Library materials, including technology devices
- Use public computers, printers, copiers (free printing/copying up to 10 pages)
- Access the Library’s free Wi-Fi
- Apply for a Library card and get account assistance
- Pick up holds and utilize self-checkout machines
- Receive multi-lingual support from librarians and literacy specialists
-
For more details, visit sjpl.org/reopening
We will continue to offer virtual programs, online chat and phone assistance 7 days per week, Express Pickup service at our closed locations, and Tech Access (indoor computer usage) at select locations.
