With spring and warmer weather now with us (for the most part), the team at Haven Harbour Marina Resorts would like to remind our patrons and guests to always boat responsibly, and to keep the below springtime safety tips front of mind.
But first, we kindly remind our do-it-yourselfers commissioning this spring to abide by all hazardous materials handling and environmental guidelines, as both Haven Harbour Marina and Haven Harbour South follow Maryland Clean Marinas protocol.
Specific examples include the use of felt ground covers to ensure that zero hazards make their way into our waterways, the use of a dustless sander, and avoiding the disposal of wet paint or other solvents into on-site dumpsters. Paint rollers, trays and cans must be fully dry – and only then may they be discarded. These are just a few of the many important rules and regulations related to the handling of hazardous materials for the protection and care of our environment. Further guidelines are available at dnr.maryland.gov.
- Ensure life jackets are of proper fit, check the manufacturer ratings for your size and weight, and always make sure that the life jacket is correctly zipped and/or buckled when in use.
- Restock your first aid kit as needed, taking time to replace any items that have expired. Confirm that all battery-powered devices are equipped with fresh batteries and in operable condition.
- Make sure you have two communications devices that will work when wet – like a VHF radio and emergency locator beacon. Other equipment to double-check include your trailer and tire pressure, lights and tie downs.
- Schedule a vessel safety check (information forthcoming regarding free on-site vessel checks conducted by America's Boating Club Valley Forge this June for slipholders) to ensure your spring readiness, and consider enrolling in a boating safety course to brush up or learn new skills.
