REACH OUT!

Friendliness is not the same as hospitality. Comments like: “we don’t have people in church like we used to” or “there are no children” are reflections of us and how we interact with guests.

 

“We think we are friendly enough. We often defend our friendliness while ignoring the fact that visitors cannot find a place within our community. In reality, most everything the church does is designed for the benefit and comfort of the members, and we invite new people into what we are already doing for ourselves”. (The Art of Hospitality)

 

The challenge for those who have been in church for years is to step outside of comfort zones, to separate from friends, to sit with new guests and engage in conversation. To treat guests as you would treat a guest in your home.

 

Every church member should be responsible for noticing a guest, welcoming a guest and spending at least 3 minutes talking to a guest.

 

“We say we want to grow and that we want nonreligious and nominally religious people to experience God in our church. But our actions don’t always match our words. We want to grow, but we don’t want to give up our seats. We want to welcome younger people, but we don’t want to change the style or time of worship. Jesus calls us to reach deeper as his ambassadors, to be fishers of people, but a church that is focused on itself begins to lose its potential in the wider community to reach new people.” (The Art of Hospitality)

 

Moving away from the status quo is necessary for churches to stay current and vibrant. Let’s shake off the dust, remodel our methods, revamp our thinking and be more like Jesus; going into the crowds instead of waiting for them to come to us.

Church Library Open Again

Sunday Mornings

The library will once again be open on Sunday mornings before church and during coffee hour. The United Women in Faith Reading Program books will be back in the library on the UWF reading shelves. All are welcome to check out these books, but we do ask they be kept out no longer than two weeks. Thank you.

Gratitude at HOL

Have you ever taken time to think of all the things you are grateful for? Just to sit, doing nothing but thinking about things? Your family, your friends, your work, your church, your health, everything that you have?


Have you taken the time while in worship service, or even just sitting in church by

yourself, to be grateful for the building, the staff, the people who make up the Heart of

Longmont?


I have always loved just sitting in the sanctuary, whether for worship or just by myself.

When I am by myself, I like the solitude, listening to the silence, and thinking of all the people I have shared time with in the church. I grew up in the Wray United Methodist Church and was a member and attended church there for over 45 years. We have attended church here in Longmont since I met Joyce in 1979 and were married here in 1980. We have been members at the HOL since 2001.


It is the people and the relationships in the church; the fellowship with others in the

church that make the church a Church. I have served in many ways and worked with many people during my lifetime and I am grateful for each and every one of them.


I attend worship to offer my songs of praise and prayers of thanksgiving for all God has

already done for me. Do you do the same?


I give my offerings to the Church, place it in the offering plate and watch it placed on the alter as a way of saying “thanks” to my loving heavenly Father for all the blessings God has given me as a child of God.


Do you feel the same way? Are you giving, not out of obligation or guilt, but giving “just

to say thanks” for all God has given you?

Did you know…

Through Mountain Sky United Methodist Foundation, you as an individual can invest your savings in accounts similar to CDs and Money Markets where you will earn above-average interest rates. The fund is called the Methodists Helping Methodists Fund. Your investments allow the Foundation to provide capital improvement loans to United Methodist Churches throughout the region. 


Investment options include:

  • Fixed-Rate Investments (one, two, three, four, and five-year) are available for amounts $1,000 and above. Interest is paid out quarterly or reinvested, depending on investor wishes.
  • Variable-Rate Investments are available with a minimum investment of $500. Withdrawals can be made at any time upon written notice.


At July 20, 2022, rates for fixed-rate investments range from .70% for a 12-month term on deposits of $1,000 to $4,999 up to 2.32% for a 60-month term on deposits of $10,000 and over. Variable-rate accounts starting at $500 pay .50%.

Change for Change

It started as a thought, a bit of a dream and then it became a reality. Recognizing that our parking lot exceeds our needs, donating the land for building affordable housing was a logical step. Hopefully by now you have heard that we are in partnership with The Inn Between.


We will deed 1/2 acre to The Inn Between for them to construct approximately 12 2-story units with either 2 or 3 bedrooms for families.


Please help us determine a name for this wonderful venture. Starting August 7th you will see three containers in the gallery labeled either Isaiah Homes, Wesley Homes, or Samuel Homes.


You can vote for your favorite by placing loose change (or bills) into the container of your choice. Voting will end on August 28th. The name with the most money will win. All proceeds will go to cover any of the church’s costs associated with the land transfer.

Micro-Housing FAQ

What is the process for donating part of our parking lot to another entity?


The disposition of property is addressed in the Book of Discipline (2016) (paragraph 2541 for those interested). It stipulates that a church needs approval of the pastor and district superintendent, and approval of The Mountain Sky Conference board of church location and building. Once these approvals are received, the final approval of the church membership is needed through a vote in an all Church Conference.


Assuming approvals of the pastor, district superintendent, and The Mountain Sky Conference board of church location and building are received, is there a date for the all church conference?


We expect to have the required approvals in August and have tentatively set September 25 for the all church conference.


Will we receive more information and have an opportunity to ask questions in advance of the all church conference?


As this project is in the very early stages of development, we anticipate new information almost on a weekly basis. We will provide regular updates on our website (new page being developed called “Housing Project”) and in the Pulse.


We are also planning two Q&A sessions in September (the 11th and 18th after the service) with a zoom session mid-September (date TBD) for anyone unable to be in church.


What is the cost to the church?


At this time, we expect to incur all necessary costs to convey land, including any surveys, and re-platting, and recording fees that may apply. We are in the process of getting an estimate of these costs, but believe they could be in the $10-15,000 range. We will be pursuing grants to help offset any of the costs to transfer the land.


Another potential cost impact is related to the playground. We will be exploring options for either sharing the playground with the new development or working with Wild Plum to relocate it to a more convenient location for the pre-k and toddlers in the program. Cost estimates will be part of the evaluation. Finally, it must be noted that one of the costs to the church is the donation of the land; however, this is not a cash cost and as such does not impact our budget.


How many people per unit? How many parking places will be allocated? Will there be any lawn space for any of the units? Who will do the maintenance (i.e. painting, roofing if needed and small repairs needed in any home)? Who will determine eviction for things like domestic violence, drug use or registered sex offender, etc.?


The Inn Between will own and manage the development, honoring HOL’s wishes that the residents are families whose income is at or below 40% of Longmont’s Average Median Income. Unit design, occupancy rates, parking, green space, etc. will all be determined by The Inn Between’s architect, with input from HOL, and to ensure compliance with city codes and ordinances. The Inn Between has not yet selected an architect.


As for facility maintenance and repairs, again The Inn Between will handle as the property owner and manager.


Finally, residents of the units will be expected to comply with their commitments to The Inn Between, and local laws and regulations.

Heart of Longmont

Summer Music Recital

Please join us for the Heart of Longmont Summer Music Recital on Sunday August 14, 2022, at 2:00 PM. The Heart of Longmont Handbell Choir will be performing, and the concert will also feature works for solo organ, flute and piano, solo piano and organ-piano duet. You’ll hear music by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Joplin, Lennon & McCartney, and more. It’s going to be an exciting musical event so please plan to attend!

July's compassion offering supports Days for Girls International.


Days for Girls is turning periods into pathways. They increase access to menstrual care and education by developing global partnerships, cultivating Social Entrepreneurs, mobilizing volunteers and innovating sustainable solutions that shatter stigma and limitations for women and girls.
