SHAMROCK LINES
May 2021
The Finish Line
From Scotus Central Catholic President, Jeff Ohnoutka

May has arrived and we have reached the last lap of the 2020-21 school year. Of course, there are many things to be thankful for and just being in school tops the list. I am thankful though for our senior class.

This group has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I am so proud of the way they have handled adversity and for the positive leadership, they have shown throughout this school year. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors and I am confident that they are prepared to chase their dreams.

Best of luck seniors! You will always have a home at Scotus Central Catholic.

The 40th Annual Gala

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making the 40th annual Gala dinner/auction another success. This is the school’s largest annual fundraiser and all of the general proceeds are used to balance the school’s budget.

Special thanks go to our Gala committee co-chairs: Tim & LeAnn Parker, Bobby & Rachel Pensick, Joe & Amy Wemhoff, Dan & Jill Clarey, Mike & Nicole Fleming and Joe & Shelly Steffensmeier. Kudos to next year’s vice-chairs who also contributed in a big way this year: Tim & Caree Cielocha, Cory & Tricia Faust and Matt & Sharee Jedlicka.

This year’s event offered new challenges because it was conducted as a hybrid fundraiser—with both in person guests and at-home guests participating. Guests who participated through at-home parties were able to view a live stream of the in-person activity which was hosted this year at the new St. Bonaventure Parish Center. Scotus marketing director, Taylor Dahl, was instrumental in coordinating the live and virtual activities and the online auction bidding through our platform host, Qtego.

Contributions to support the Gala special project to enhance the hot water distribution throughout our school currently total:
Gala Lottery Winners were:
$12,000 Grand Prize: Barbara Brakenhoff
$500 each: Richard McPhillips, Gary & Chris Bock, John Hogue and Leonard Kaslon.
Rifle Raffle Winner: Marcus Faltys
Gala Raffle Winners: Ronette Preister
$1,500 in HyVee Gift Cards
$500 Scheels Gift Card
Jewelry Winners: Dr. Michelle Sell and Nicole Fleming

Our estimated net total is $225,000, we also raised $20,792 for the special Fund-A-Need Hot Water Project. Thanks again Shamrock Nation and be sure to reserve April 9, 2022 for next year’s Gala!

Children’s Scholarship Fund
Contributions to the Children’s Scholarship Fund are still needed. To date we have raised $12,467.50 towards our 2021 Columbus three-parish goal of $24,000.
The 2020-21 school year marks the 19th year that the Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha has provided tuition assistance to students in our Columbus Catholic schools. Since its inception in 1999, CSF has provided $799,109.65 in scholarship support to students in the Columbus Catholic Schools!

The beauty of the program is that every dollar raised in Columbus is matched and returned! In recent years we’ve raised on average $21,000 in our three parishes and submitted that sum to CSF-Omaha. In return our schools received a combined $50,000 to $65,000 in scholarships helping on average, 70 students attend one of our four Catholic schools, grades K-8. Not a bad investment!
Would you invest $50.00 that will be matched and returned to our Catholic schools as a $125.00 scholarship? Or donate $100.00 that will become a $250.00 scholarship? That’s nearly the return our Columbus supporters have received in recent years.

The Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF) program is based in New York and locally managed by a private foundation in Omaha. Tuition assistance is provided for parochial school students attending grades K-8 and families must demonstrate financial need through an application in order to qualify for a scholarship. Each family is expected to contribute a minimum of $500 toward tuition expenses.
CSF is a designated 501 (c) 3 and your gift is tax deductible to the extent provided by law. We cannot receive CSF scholarship funding unless local contributions are raised. Please consider making a contribution, (checks payable to: Children’s Scholarship Fund) and send your donation to Scotus in an envelope marked “CSF.”

Remember, every dollar you contribute will be matched and returned to our Columbus Catholic schools!
The Archdiocese of Omaha is hosting Joy of Giving, a 24-hour Day of Giving set to benefit the schools, parishes, ministries and organizations of the Archdiocese of Omaha. Joy of Giving directly speaks to the archdiocese’s vision of “One Church” by providing a new opportunity to unify and amplify the significance of our Catholic community and its impact across 23 counties of northeast Nebraska.
Joy of Giving will be held Wednesday, May 19 from 12:01a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The Joy of Giving website will be live in the upcoming weeks.

WHAT IS Joy of Giving? Joy of Giving is a 24-hour Day of Giving where the faithful in the Archdiocese of Omaha will unite to give thanks and give back to their favorite Catholic organizations through an online gift. Credit card or ACH donations for Joy of Giving can be made directly on the parish, school, ministry or organization page at omaha.igivecatholictogether.org.

WHO IS COORDINATING THIS? This unique giving day is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Omaha and is coordinated by a planning committee made up of parish and school staff from across the archdiocese. This committee has collaborated to lead the effort to ensure that this is a successful day and is an available resource to participants. In addition, we will be working with the #IGiveCatholic platform to facilitate online gifts.

Scotus Central Catholic has agreed to participate in this event and look for the event updates on social media and in the parish bulletins!
